Josiah Giles, ‘20, participates in Kyle Dodson’s Socratic seminar focusing on ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, March 29.
Dodson’s period six English 11 took part in this activity to grow their knowledge of this book. A Socratic seminar is a discussion based on a text. All the participants prepared questions that are thought-provoking and caused all other participants to think. In addition, Socratic seminars help the readers of a text gain a deeper understanding of the material.
Junior Danielle Foster loved the opportunity this exercise provided for her to learn her classmates differing opinions.
“From this activity, I learned that it is good to participate in class discussions in order to learn other people’s perspectives,” Foster said. “In addition, I was able to gain knowledge from my classmates. This year we have learned a lot about the American Dream and I’m looking forward to seeing my writing skills grow from this class.”
