Shaylee Jones joins FC staff to succeed a volleyball coach of five valley championships teams and physical education (P.E.) teacher of 27 years.
Eunie McEntee, P.E. teacher and previous cheer coach, held Jones? position for the first semester while she worked on her teacher?s credential at Fresno Pacific University.
?I?m actually glad I started the job in the middle of the school year,? Jones said. ?Although it was difficult for the girls to have one teacher and then flip to another one. Eunie formed this foundation for the girls and then I was able to work off of that.?
Before Jones began the job, she felt the pressure to meet the girls’ expectations.
?I was worried if I would be able to make the girls see how important daily exercise really is,? Jones said. ?I could tell the girls really adored and looked up to Eunie since she was a great teacher, but I?m working on developing similar traits.?
Jones tries to educate the girls with the fundamentals in every sport. In order for the class to gain a variety, Jones rotates units every few weeks.
?I think Jones is doing good,? Sarah Mesple, ?07, said. ?I?ve noticed she explains more and goes in to more details and explaining than how McEntee did. I?ve also noticed she gives fun nutritional facts for every unit, it really shows how she values health and exercise.?
McEntee redirected to spend more time with family. For more information regarding McEntee check out Ashley Hall?s Jan. 17, 2007, article, P.E. coach relinquishes title.
After holding this position for only a month Jones already intends to fill this office permanently.
?This is a job that I want to hold for as long as I can,? Jones said. ?This has been my dream job ever since I knew what I wanted to do. The only thing that could intervene is my intention of starting a family.?
Jones attempts secondary job
In addition to teaching five periods of P.E., Jones will also head the volleyball program. Larry Orender, coach of nine years, plans to work for the state as a correctional officer.
?I gave Jones many responsibilities such as over-seeing, key planning for practices and games,? Orender said. ?I tried to tap into her coaching style so it would be easier for her to learn, as a coach.?
With 10 years of volleyball experience, Jones believes she needs to improve by spending time with the girls.
?Orender has a lot of volleyball experience and has formed good relationships with the girls,? Jones said. ?I hope to form similar, but different relationships. It?s helped that I assisted coaching varsity last year.?
During the transition, Orender passed one word of advice to Jones.
?It?s not about wins or losses,? Orender said. ?It?s how a team plans and fights that makes them great.?
