As Fresno County continues to teach schools through alternative learning due to COVID-19, teachers at Fresno Christian educate students through WebEx for the fall semester. Andrea Donaghe, strategically sets up her workspace to efficiently teach her English 10 students, Oct. 1.
With empty classrooms teachers prepare each day setting up ring lights, webcams with multiple screens. Bible and leadership teacher Aubri Foster has learned to adjust to the new environment she spends her day in but definitely prefers class seats to be filled .
“There is a perceived barrier between students, teachers, and learning when you involve a screen, Foster said.” It has been tough to draw out active engagement with my students during our Webex meetings, but definitely not impossible. We have had some funny moments for sure!”
“I am most missing the connection that face-to-face instruction provides and the opportunities to see how my students are doing by the body language and personal interaction that a normal class setting allows. Our students can hide quite a bit on a screen, but it’s tougher to hide at our school campus.I miss the joy and laughter that each student brings into the hallways. I hope my students know how much they are loved and missed. This room is too quiet!”
Teachers are now predicting starting in-person classes again in the upcoming weeks. As Fresno County strives to remain in the red zone, many schools are preparing a return to the socially distanced classroom.
