Reclaiming a national ranking, The Feather Online earned bragging rights as one of the top three daily high school digital newspapers in the country. This recognition comes most recently from Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown announcement made Dec. 1.
This comes on the heels of the National Scholastic Press Association Online Pacemaker honor, April 2020. Only three high schools in the United States can claim both these national recognitions during the 2019-20 season. These awards were given regardless of school size, division or state.
However, during the 2020-21 school year, The Feather staff has needed to make adjustments. While last year’s staff consisted of 37 members, currently, the staff is 13 strong.
One team with two divisions writers and a visual media team of photojournalists and video journalists. Five staffers are brand new to journalism, joining six seniors. For the first month and a half of the 2020-21 school year, co-adviser Kori James was challenged with the task of teaching the basics of “backpack journalism” through a screen while co-adviser was on a personal leave of absence until the first week of November.
Now that students are back on campus, Feather journalists put their training to the test. Only six writers, including editor-in-chief and senior Bryce Foshee, produce articles. As a result of this and other challenges, the campus newspaper is in process of remaking itself.
