Junior Soren Sobrado attempts to give a friend a poorly wrapped Christmas gift. However, home ec. teacher Kimberly Bell comes to the rescue and teaches him the proper way to wrap a Christmas gift and the value of her home ec. class.
Fellow classmate Henry Baker, ’22, finds special meaning behind a purposefully wrapped present.
“When I receive a gift that someone has put time into, it means to me that they care,” Baker said. “One time I wrapped and entire Christmas tree with a plastic bag. I didn’t put effort into that one.”
Kimberly Bell has been teaching home ec. since 2016, bringing a new twist on a classic high school class. During the year students learn traditional cooking skills along with life skills. Here’s a list of some of her more popular lessons.
Money management
Wardrobe training including tying ties
Car maintenance
Hair cutting
Hospitality
Kitchen etiquette and food preparation
Conflict resolution
The five love languages
Many food competitions
If you are interested in taking home ec., be sure to sign up in the spring. This class counts as one of the mandatory courses in Arts, required for high school graduates. For more information, you can talk academic adviser Evangelina Tello.
