AP European history students participate in an enlightenment salon activity, while in character discussing philosophical questions from that era as a cumulative study tool for their exam, Jan. 13.
Teacher Kori James, brings out the character of Marie Therese Rodet Geoffrin, who was a famous french salon owner during the enlightenment. This activity has been an AP Euro class tradition since she began teaching the class in 2013.
To get to know one another, each character engages in multiple conversations after presenting their calling card to one another. The calling card gives fast facts and key information to aid in the discussion.
Topics of conversation regard the roles of society in the government, meaning of life and the role of citizens in government. Extra credit was given for students is embraced the roll by dressing as their character.
Sophomore Zoe Bull is a first time AP student this year and took on the roll of Thomas Hobbs.
“Getting to be in character was a nice change of pace from what I’m used to,” said Bull. “Usually, during a history class you would learn about a character through reading. This way provided an interesting and unique experience that enabled a more in depth and personal study of a multitude of different personalities. It was definitely one of the most fun and beneficial class activities I’ve taken part in.”
AP Euro students continue through their units and next up will be the French Revolution. Re-enacting this historical period could be interesting.
