“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Known for his incredible ability to move people with his words, Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired many to follow his dream. King worked alongside his father as a co-pastor for Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta until his death in 1964. By the mid 1950s, King was ready to become a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization in the nation.
He soon accepted a position of leadership for the first great Negro nonviolent bus boycott that began in 1955. This lasted around 382 days. On December 21, 1956, the Supreme Court of the United States had declared the laws requiring segregation on buses unconstitutional. Negroes and whites would ride the buses as equals.
