As the fifth period bell rings, students suit up for the seventh annual 3-on-3 basketball intramurals. The tournament began on March 26 and will continue, following spring break.
“We wanted to do another (intramural) and it (basketball) is one of our biggest intramurals that everyone participates in,” Josh Tosland, student leadership adviser, said. “I think the students enjoy it because there are small teams, many students can play and it is the best sport around.”
As March Madness continues, student leadership hosts the third intramural of the year. Leadership previously held badminton and dodgeball intramural.
“I played in the 3-on-3 intramurals last year and I am playing this year,” Ryan Brunn, ’08, said. “I am playing again because I like it. It also gives me a chance to actually play the sport, because I don’t play on the team.”
Each day the teams of three play a single game for 10-minutes. Their win and loss record determines their tournament placement. There are 18 teams competing for the first prize: a free pizza.
“I am playing in the basketball intramurals, because I want my team to dominate,” Vincent Cabias, ’09, said. “We are in it to win it. My team is doing well.”
All students and teachers are welcome to play with certain restrictions. Only one boy from the basketball team is allowed in each group of three, one teacher per team or two girl basketball players.
“I picked the team I have now,” David Fujihara, ’08, said, “because I thought we would have a good time playing together.”
The games are held at lunch in the FC gym; any student not participating is able to view the competition.
“The intramurals lightens everyone up,” Kelsey Penner, ’08, said, “because it adds a fun environment and players can use it as an outlet for stress and frustation. It’s also fun to watch people mess around and have fun at lunch. The competive nature of intramurals provides entertainment.”
