A virtual cheer competition? That was the only option for the Fresno Christian varsity cheer team.
Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders (FCC) holds a virtual cheer competition nationally as an alternative due to COVID-19. Despite this setback, high school cheer still expects to bring home a trophy with their routine to the song “Band Dance” and “Fight Song”.
They competed in the game day division (non-stunting) and pre-recorded their routine, Feb. 17. Due to California regulations for COVID, this group had to come up with a non-stunt routine which is difficult for a team known for their stunting.
Cheer captain, Addie Richardson, ‘21, shares struggles she has to deal with due to COVID.
“It was discouraging at times because we didn’t know if or when football would start,” Richardson said. “Wearing a mask during practice definitely made a huge adjustment in the way we practiced as well, but we all tried to have a positive mindset.”
Richardson has been a part of the campus cheer team for six years but does not plan to cheer through college.
Co-captain, Caleigh Alday, ‘21, shares about the bond their team has together.
“As a captain,” Alday said. “I never wanted my team to go through this pandemic with the restrictions we faced. However, doesn’t mean I can’t lead by example and be the leader these girls need,”
Alday has cheered on campus for 13 years and plans to continue all the way through college. When she is not cheering for the school, Alday competes full time at Clovis Academy of Dance. She has had the drive to perform since she was three and continues to nurture that desire with an average of 25 hours a week in the dance studio alone.
“Up until I graduate and after, I hope these ladies desire to love one another and be the team I know they are!” Alday said.
As a senior, Alday was hoping for COVID restrictions to lift for her last year of high school, but that does not shake her abilities to be a leader for her team and a good example of perseverance.
“FCS varsity already has big plans this year, after I graduate, I will continue to cheer for them and be the support they need.”
FCS cheer continues to practice weekly and always ready for the green light to cheer alongside sports teams.
