Deemed the best tri-tip sandwich in Fresno
Although prices continue to rise, and more eateries pop out of the ground to attract more people, Mike’s Grill still flourishes in Fresno. Mike’s Grill provides delicious Texas style barbecue and claims to serve the best tri-tip in Fresno.
Mike’s Grill rests on the corner of Cedar and Herndon, just a couple minutes south of Cedar and Herndon from Fresno Christian. The small building used to exist as a key kiosk, but now serves as one of the best eateries in town.
Their delicious menu consists of pulled pork, sausage, and tri-tip sandwiches, along with pork ribs right off the grill. They also offer separate sides, such as rice pilaf, potato salad, and garlic toast.
As I pulled up to Mike’s Grill, I noticed the building looked too small to be a restaurant, but too big to be a eating kiosk. In fact, the joint was just big enough to prepare meals.
Metal chairs and tables stretched out underneath a white canopy tent just outside. A couple or two sat at a table, but other than that there was no one around. A giant grill stood on the outside of the building, roasting tri-tip and ribs.
But what Mike’s Grill lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in food. Every single component of their tri-tip sandwich tasted perfect together. The French bread held just the right amount of crunch, and the barbecue sauce poured over made my mouth water. — Kamryn Schultz
But what Mike’s Grill lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in food. Every single component of their tri-tip sandwich tasted perfect together. The French bread held just the right amount of crunch, and the barbecue sauce poured over made my mouth water.
But the tri-tip was by far the best I’ve ever eaten. The meat acquired a smokey flavor, and was grilled to perfection. I also ate some of their available side options. I’ve always loved rice pilaf, and Mike’s did not disappoint, with the warm noodles and large quantities.
I also tried their macaroni salad. I liked that the dish wasn’t smothered in mayonnaise, but it tasted of too much celery. As I sat down underneath the tent finishing my food, a swarm of flies flew left and right, landing on the food and buzzing around my head. Since the grill rested outside the building, the bugs decided it was the best place to go.
I was extremely bothered that they landed on my food, and had to shield my dinner the whole time. The people that worked there were very nice as they walked out the building and handed me the food. They worked with efficiency and made the meal very quickly.
Besides the scenery and some of the sides, overall the prices were reasonable for the excellent food and the service was great.
Mike’s Grill is opened Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
