Juniors begin float building with confidence, raise money
This year the theme of FC’s homecoming is ‘Homecoming for Humanity,’ Oct. 6. This year floats are focused on nonprofits and the class to raise the most money for their selected organization wins. Leading up to homecoming The Feather will post updates on the floats from each class. The float themes selected are; freshmen, Miss Winkles, sophomores, Lanna Coffee, juniors, Hume Lake and seniors, Red Cross.
UPDATE Sept. 23- The junior class put up the walls to start their float. They attached the cardboard walls to wooden poles to keep the structure stable. They then planned out what the float would look like and where they would place all their materials.
UPDATE Sept. 30- The junior class painted their walls for their Hume N’ Beans cafe. They put down fake grass for their outdoor scene and made sure the boards were stable. They also started to paint and set up the bar for the cafe to serve food.
For the past two years, the junior class built floats for homecoming. From a French bakery freshman year to a 40s-themed soda bar sophomore year, the class made the floats as realistic as possible. And this year is no exception.
The juniors decided to support Hume Lake in their float this year. The Christian camp’s goal is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ globally through camping ministry. Griffin Schmidt, ’19, is the leader of the float building process.
“We chose to support Hume Lake because our class loved the idea and we just wanted to support what we are doing as a whole,” Schmidt said. “I am very excited for the float building and getting involved with our class. I like the theme for this year and I’m excited to participate.”
One idea for the float came from Julia Fikse, ’19, who suggested they build a fake campfire with campers sitting around on logs. A couple students could play the guitar and sing around the campfire while the rest make and eat s’mores.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the junior class began planning for their float at Nick Rocca’s house. Macie Thompson, ’19, participated in the float ideas and enjoyed being around her friends.
“At the float building we discussed what we should build and what materials we will be needing to use,” Thompson said. “I had a blast talking it through with everyone; it was super fun and we all laughed a lot. I am looking forward to how our float is going to turn out and how much money we raise for Hume Lake.”
The class of 2019 plan to build every weekend leading up to homecoming, and also during homecoming week. Those who wish to donate to Hume Lake can do so via the the 2017 juniors Homecoming Go Fund Me Humanity float drive for Hume Lake.
