The second period Feather crew spends the morning at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, practicing their journalism skills, March 10.
Gathering information for an upcoming article, students took turns photographing, interviewing, and even practiced food reviews at the zoo’s Safari Cafe, Kopje Lodge, and Kudu Cafe.
“I got the opportunity to take photos with a professional camera, which is something I hadn’t done before,” said Lola Fuller ‘25, “The most helpful training thing that we did is interviewing people. I got to see how my classmates approached the people they wanted to interview, hear what questions they asked and how they responded to people’s answers.”
Journalists spent three hours at the zoo, not only practicing skills, but also seizing the opportunity to have a little fun feeding giraffes, petting sharks and stingrays, and strolling through the new Zoorassic Park.
Lot’s of construction, resulting in paths filled with concrete trucks and construction workers, is occurring at the zoo as new exhibits are added, including the Kingdoms of Asia. The project is expected to finish late 2022, bringing Fresno Sunda Gharial, small-clawed otters, and many other South Asian animals to the new exhibits.
My goal for the trip was to practice interviewing staff, capture pictures of animals, and shoot candid shots of team training. By the end of the day, I took over 870 photos. Down below you can see a small gallery of my favorite shots.
