All around the nation, on May 1st, seniors announced colleges they will be attending the following semester. National college decision day is also the last day for students to submit their deposits to the school of their choice.
Through the help of Fresno Christian’s school counselor, Evangelina Escovedo, seniors start to contemplate their possible college choices as early as freshman year. Escovedo provides a clear layout for what to think of each year to well prepare students.
This year seniors have spread themselves out over the country, traveling as far as Texas and Oklahoma. Senior Haley Wedeking, is attending Dallas Baptist University next fall and is excited to be doing something new.
“It’s scary but it’s one of the reasons I want to go,” Wedeking says, “to push myself out of my comfort zone. I’m looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people who come from all over the country. I was deciding between Grand Canyon University and Dallas Baptist University but, I am excited to study Christian Studies and Christian Leadership next year.”
As each decision day comes around, it is clear that one school is popular among students. Grand Canyon University has accepted dozens of students from Fresno Christian onto its campus. This year they offered 19 students, scholarships, in total, they were willing to give $811,300 to Fresno Christian students. Next semester, 17 out of the 19 students will be attending GCU.
GCU is a known private Christian university, and knowing that many of his classmates will also be attending this school, convinced Senior Edward Fiske to join the college.
“I like the Christian atmosphere and how comfortable it feels there,” Fiske said. “Knowing a lot of people going there also makes it feel very familiar, but there is still an opportunity to meet new people, it’s a mix of both. At first, I was considering Cal Baptist University or Fresno State, but I am now looking forward to the business program at Grand Canyon University.”
Senior Ashely Sciacqua is one of few staying in town next year, she shares her plans for the upcoming year at Fresno State.
“I got into Fresno State’s Smittcamp honors program with a full ride,” Sciacqua says. “I was planning on going to Arizona State but Fresno State gave me such a huge opportunity that I didn’t want to miss.”
“The senior class has worked hard to be accepted into the college of their choice throughout their high school careers. Senior Natalie Johnson, also attending DBU, came out on top with her scholarships equaling $888,100. The class of 2022 as a whole was offered more than $3.9 million dollars in scholarship amongst only 29 of the graduates.
As the year comes to an end with their last exams and the annual senior trip on May 18-20, that final walk across the stage will take place May 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the PC auditorium. Congratulations to the class of 2022!
