Being a part of The Feather Online for the past two years has been such an amazing and challenging experience. As a photojournalist, I’ve put in a lot of effort,
devotion and patience. Some who never joined The Feather might believe it’s just a few clicks of a button and voilà, we have the perfect photo. Or, some may think it’s a waste of time and you learn nothing. Joining the Feather isn’t easy, but you learn not only how to become a better writer and photographer, but life skills for your future. Capturing events challenged me to really step out past my comfort zone. I had to learn to be quick with my shots, while also having the right camera settings.
I’ve uncovered personal skill sets I didn’t realize were in me, while expanding on abilities that I already had. Being a writer and photographer isn’t just snapping a picture and forming a sentence, but growing relationships with people around you. I’ve learned to be a better communicator, to be more patient and kind. Being a part of this team changed my life and I will forever be thankful for these people in my life.
You join a class and people have their arms open wide like they were waiting for you. It’s not a regular class of people, but a family. I’ve formed friendships with people who pushed and guided me to be the best version of myself in this past year. For that, I’d like to express my gratitude to Bella Johns. I’ve had days when all I wanted to do was give up, but she was always there to encourage and validate me.
One particular event this year that truly challenged me was the royal battle. I needed to stay on top of things and make sure I was aware of every candidate’s movements. As a photographer, you can’t afford to waste time at events, so it’s imperative your settings are ready ahead of time. Greg Stobbe’s award party was a very memorable occasion for me. I’ve never had the privilege of photographing such an amazing event and I will always remember that night. Seeing his journey as an advisor for 25 years and everything he went through brought tears to my eyes. He deserves the award he earned, and so much more.
Some advice for newcomers to The Feather: you can’t expect to obtain a good grade if you don’t do your job. Once given an assignment, you must chase after it and get the job done. Mistakes will be made, but it’s going to stretch you to be a better photographer. You won’t regret joining and will enjoy all the amazing experiences that come with it.
I’d like to thank Kori James for pushing me to be the best version of myself. You have been such an amazing teacher in my life and I’m incredibly grateful for you. I’d also like to thank Greg Stobbe for your yearlong commitment to The Feather and for sharing your story with my class. You have inspired me to keep on going. Without these two people encouraging and leading me in The Feather, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
When I first joined the Feather, I couldn’t write one sentence without questioning myself and deleting all my work. At first when holding a camera, I had no clue what I was doing, but after some training I’ve learned so much. I did not have confidence in myself, but I’ve grown. It’s a life changing experience. If you are interested in learning photography, videography or writing, join the Feather!
