The New York Yankees took on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series, a true baseball classic. The Dodgers have star players like Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, while the Yankees have Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. This World Series ended with the Dodgers defeating the Yankees 4 games to 1.
Game 1
The first pitch of the World Series was thrown in honor of beloved Dodger Fernando Valenzuela, the number #34 was displayed on all the Dodgers jerseys. He passed on October 22, 2024, shortly before the World Series.
The Dodgers took the first run of the World Series in the fifth inning with Kike Hernandez hitting a triple and brought in by Will Smith. In the following inning, Juan Soto rips a single to get on base and Giancarlo Stanton brings him in with a 2-run home run, putting the score 2-1 Yankees.
The Dodgers tie it back up in the eighth when Ohtani hits a double and advances to third through an error, where eventually Mookie Betts would trade an out for a run. The score stays 2-2 up until the 10th inning when Anthony Volpe hits a single to bring in Jazz Chisholm, making the score 3-2 Yankees. The bottom of the 10th is where the real magic happens, with bases loaded and 2 outs Freddie Freeman walks up to the plate and absolutely crushes the ball for a grand slam, and the Dodgers take game one.
Game 2
Game two heats up in the bottom of the second with Tommy Edman hitting a home run to get a run up on the board for the Dodgers. Three outs later Soto crushes one out of the park to tie it up. Dodgers take the lead back in the third inning when Betts hits a single to get on first, followed by a two-run home run by Teoscar Hernandez to go up 3-1. The Dodgers didn’t stop there either, as Freeman knocks one out of the park to bring in another run for Los Angeles. The game stays 4-1 Dodgers until the top of the ninth when Stanton hits a ground ball into the third base resulting in a double bringing Soto in. Blake Treinen closes out the inning, however, making the final 4-2 Dodgers and the series 2-0.
Game 3
More of the same for the Dodgers in game three, with Freeman knocking out a two-run home run in the first. In the top of the third, Betts hits a double bringing Edman in from the second making the score 3-0 Dodgers in the top of the third. Three innings later, Hérnandez hits a double bringing Gavin Lux and making the score 4-0. The game stays scoreless until the bottom of the ninth when Alex Verdugo crushes a two-run home run putting two on the board for Yankees. However, the Dodgers end the inning before the Yankees can make any more runs making the final 4-2 Dodgers and the series 3-0.
Game 4
The game starts with Freeman hitting a two-run home run in the first, making it his sixth World Series home run in a row—four from this series and two from his last series in 2021 with the Atlanta Braves, breaking a league record. The following inning, Verdugo smacks a single to bring Volpe in marking the score 2-1 Dodgers. In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded Volpe hits another home run making the score 5-2 Yankees. A returning solo shot from Will Smith puts the score at 5-3.
Edman was brought in from third by Freeman, making the score 4-5 Yankees. The score stands until the bottom of the 6th when Austin Wells hits a solo shot to advance the Yankees lead to two runs. Right after that Torres blasts a three-run home run, but the inning doesn’t stop there with Judge bringing in Soto by way of a nice double. The Dodgers finally make it out of the 8th with a fly out, but the 9th inning went scoreless for both teams and the Yankees took game 4 of the series making it 3-1 Dodgers.
Game 5
The pressure is still on the Yankees to stay alive in the World Series against the Dodgers, and in game five they came out swinging. Starting off the game, Soto is walked to first, followed by Judge driving a two-run home run, finally snapping out of a brutal hitting slump. The following batter, Chisholm, cracks one out of the park and the Yankees lead the game 3-0. Verdugo hits a single, driving in Volpe from third, making the score 4-0 Yankees.
Stanton starts the bottom of the third off strong, with a solo homerun making the score 5-0 in the bottom of the third. The fourth inning goes scoreless for both teams. Coming into the fifth inning, dodgers need five runs to tie the game back up, and this is where everything would go wrong for New York.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, some inexcusable errors swung every bit of momentum away from them. After a bloop single from Will Smith, shortstop Jazz Chisholm makes a horrible throw to third, loading the bases. Following Smith’s at-bat, Betts hits a ground ball down the first base line, but Gerrit Cole forgetting to cover lead to a mistake that should only happen in Little League. That gaffe keeps the bases loaded, while giving the Dodgers their first run of the game.
Freeman hits a single to give the Dodgers two more runs. The score stands 3-5 Yankees, with runners on first and third and two outs. Teoscar Hernández brings Freddie in from first, tying up the ball game 5-5, which marks the end of the top of the fifth. Stanton brings Soto in from third with a sac fly, giving the Yankees the lead once again 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th.
The 7th inning goes scoreless and the Dodgers go into the top of the 8th needing a run to tie it back up. Lux hits a fly ball to center field, advancing the tying runner to third base. Mookie Betts steps in and hits a fly ball to center, bringing another run in, putting the Dodgers in front of the Yankees. The rest of the game goes scoreless, and the Dodgers go on to be crowned World Series champions.
