Brother-to-Brother and Sister-to-Sister is back at Fresno Christian High School after being canceled in 2019.
This program is created to connect high school students with middle school students to show that someone on campus cares about them. High school students, known as “big siblings,” are encouraged to support and get to know their “little siblings” which are middle schoolers. For instance, a big brother might cheer for his little brother at a baseball game.
Jacob Pimentel, ’25, was a little sibling in 8th grade and is now pouring into the future classes of FCHS.
“I had an older brother who could take me off campus. This was someone I could always see on campus and talk to. It was nice he was in the same grade as my actual brother. So sometimes I would see him outside of school, and it was just a really good connection I had with someone who was older and would be able to mentor me. Not necessarily someone like my peers but someone I had an innate respect for and really valued their opinion as they have lived a lot more than I have.”
Sign-ups for the program occur in the first semester. This year, more than 45 high school students signed up to be big siblings. Since most of the sign-ups were girls, James Garcia, the program coordinator, decided to pair an upperclassman with a lowerclassman to create a team of big sisters. However, the brother-to-brother pairs will remain traditional, with one big brother assigned to one little brother.
On Jan. 16, the little and big siblings meet in the Jackie Johnson Room for the first time, eagerly anticipating the first of many meetings. The older siblings create custom-made signs for each of their brothers or sisters.
