AP Euro students attended the Enlightenment Salon dressed in 1700s attire. Students were given figures to depict during that era. Choices ranged from Catherine the Great and Fedrick the Great to John Locke and Sir Isaac Newton.
The class was asked to accurately represent their historical figure throughout the period by explaining who their figure was, the details of their life, what they believed and why they were important. Then, they discussed Enlightenment ideas such as religious toleration, types of government, and human nature.
AP Euro history teacher Kori James hosted the Enlightenment Salon and played Madame Marie Thérèse Geoffrin. James has kept this tradition since she first started teaching in 2013.
Sophomore Ava Lee, a first-year AP student is enthusiastic about history and took the role of Catherine the Great.
“I really enjoyed playing Catherine rather than just learning about her because it gave me an opportunity to gain better insight on her personality and therefore giving me the ability to understand why she made the decisions that she made during her time,” Ava said.
The next unit AP Euro students will learn about is the French Revolution. The AP test will cover events in European history from the 1450s to the present day.
