TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in the United States, with more than 170 million active Americans using it. Due to usage amongst all age groups, many Americans worried it might be banned. Congress put the ban in place because TikTok is a potential “security issue” for the United States since it is owned by Bytedance, a Chinese company.
There have been many disagreements as to whether or not TikTok should be allowed on Americans’ cell phones. TikTok enthusiasts believe it should not be banned because:
-This would restrict First Amendment rights
-Many influencers will lose their income
-Businesses will also suffer due to a decrease in revenue and publicity
-It opens the door for government censorship
On the other hand, many agree with Congress and think TikTok should be banned for numerous reasons. People are concerned that it is owned by a Chinese company that can access our information, and Bytedance will have the ability to manipulate the algorithm.
On January 19, when the app is set to shut down, users will be unable to download or update it, which will eventually make the app inoperative. With the ban raising many concerns, Americans are waiting to see how this situation will unfold.
