One of the most important things to remember throughout Scholastic Journalism Week is the First Amendment Rights granted to each and every U.S. citizen. Do you know your rights?

Americans are entitled to five essential freedoms:
- Freedom Of Speech: The right to express opinions without government censorship or restraint.
- Freedom Of Religion: The right of an individual to practice any religion and worship freely.
- Freedom Of Press: Journalists’ right to publish the truth without restriction or penalty.
- Right To Petition: The right to seek change or assistance from the government to address grievances without fear of punishment.
- Right To Assemble: The right to come together and peacefully express, promote or pursue shared ideas.
These irrevocable rights are protected under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to ensure citizens’ ability to express themselves under the U.S. Democracy.
During this week, The Feather Online celebrates the power of the press and the voice of the people. Each team member contributes to the publication, utilizing the rights given to them as they express their individual opinions without fear of reprisal.
Student journalism is vital to our community because it showcases the untainted beliefs of the upcoming generations, allowing for the articulation of their growing minds.
