Beginning Feb. 26, Central Valley residents must dial 1+559 or 1+357 when making outgoing local phone calls.
Fresno is one of the many areas expected to run out of available 3-digit prefix numbers under their original area code by September this year. The additional area code allows for more local phone numbers to be accessible.
Starting March 26, new numbers will be assigned the 559 or 357 area code depending upon availability.
With the new changes, residents must reprogram any equipment that uses 7-digit dialing to accommodate the 1 + area code + telephone number to ensure effectiveness. This includes alarms, fax machines, automatic dialers, speed-dialing and medical monitoring devices. Ensure that business cards, checks, advertisements, etc are updated to indicate the changes made.
Make sure you know how the changes will affect you, as the areas under the 559 code include all or parts of Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Tulare, Merced and Kings counties. This may also affect communities such as Clovis, Coalinga, Fresno, Madera, Porterville, Reedley, Selma, and Visalia.
