The Fresno State Bulldogs finished a testing season, ending last season with a 7-6 record, and now carrying a four-game win streak. With valuable veterans and fresh faces this year, the team is anticipating a transitional season under new Head Coach Matt Entz.
Entz didn’t just inherit the team; he took on the team’s legacy. After the departure of the previous head coach, Jeff Tedford, who led the Bulldogs to multiple Mountain West Conference championships, Coach Entz stepped into a role with high expectations for the team’s future.
Since taking over the program, Coach Entz wasted no time in setting the tone for his team. Known for his disciplined coaching style at North Dakota State, Entz has brought that same mentality to the Central Valley.
“It’s always a race to maturity when you are working with 18 to 21-year olds,” Entz said following a recent scrimmage. “We’ve got to move faster and with more urgency.”
Even in the early part of the season, the Bulldogs still show signs of growth. The defense looks more aggressive, while the offense builds up rhythm and smart decision-making, resulting in the team appearing more disciplined overall.

“I think both our offensive line and defensive line are much more improved from when we started,” Entz said.
The voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leoffler, believes Entz’s arrival is more than just a new coach but a fresh start for the whole team.
“It was a clean slate,” Leoffler said. “The previous staff had their impressions of everyone, but this guy gave guys who maybe didn’t think they’d get a chance a real opportunity to make a first impression, and a lot of them had stepped up.”
He believes the new approach is already changing the team’s mindset. They’re not being judged on how they played last season; it’s all about how they’re playing now, in the moment.
As with any coaching situation, there is always room for improvement. Entz emphasizes the importance of staying healthy and keeping personnel available on his roster throughout the season.
“You’re only a play away from losing that depth,” Entz said. “Somebody’s got to elevate their game and become that fourth player.”

The Bulldogs are off to a strong 4-1 start at the end of September. After losing their first game to Kansas, they bounced back, winning four straight games, showing clear signs of growth under Entz.
There are still plenty of strengths to build upon. Entz emphasized the improvements in both the offense and defense. This was his area of focus since his arrival at Fresno State. He also recognized the veteran leadership from the tight ends and the running backs, which adds another sense of stability for the offense. On the defensive side of the ball, they showed a lot of strength and aggressiveness. This is just the beginning of the new era. Only time will tell what will happen next.
