A spirit of praise fills the student body as they enter into a time of worship. Spiritual Emphasis Week, a long-standing tradition on campus, gives students the chance to focus on the Lord. This week’s activities include chapel every day from March 18-22.
“Spiritual Emphasis Week is a tradition we have had on campus for as long as the high school has been here,” Scott Falk, campus pastor, said. “A main reason for having this week is to get the focus off of ourselves. It often takes a change in routine to help you focus on things that are often forgotten. Having chapel everyday allows us to focus on the things that are really important.”
This year, drama will be performing on two of the days during chapel.
“Drama is performing two different one act plays during chapel,” Tom McEntee, drama teacher, said. “Both are serious dramas and I hope that the content of the plays get the students to think on important matters.”
David Chumley from Valley Christian Center will be the guest speaker on Tuesday and Thursday.
Wednesday will consist of a worship time, and the Student Leadership will also be serving communion.
“Having communion is a way for the student body to come together,” Falk said. “It gives us the opportunity to come together as a community of faith and focus on the Lord. It also helps remind us that as Christians we belong together as a family.”
Students involved in the planning of the event recognize the importance of making the week interesting for the students.
“When we were planning the event for each day of the week, we tried to schedule things that the students would enjoy,” Kristy Howard, ’04, said. “We got a good speaker and the drama performing is always interesting. Although we wanted to make the week fun, the real reason for the week is to remind students of their commitments to God.”
This year, Spiritual Emphasis will be held the week before Easter. Having the week during the Easter season gives students the chance to focus on the sacrifice of Christ.
