The Eagles overall record is 15-3, and 8-0 in the West Sequoia League as of Oct. 25. The Eagles will compete in the CIF tournament, Nov. 7.

BAKERSFIELD CHRISTIAN SHUTS OUT FC on Nov. 6
Despite the girls undefeated record in league, the eagles could not score against Bakersfield Christian, Nov. 6.
No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, lost, 0-6, 0-6, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, 0-6, 0-6, No. 3 Kristian Palmer, ’09, lost, 0-6, 1-6, No. 4 Megan Ortiz, ’09. lost, 2-6, 2-6, No. 5 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, 1-6, 1-6, No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, lost, 1-6, 1-6.
“This was the hardest match I have ever played in my whole tennis career,” Shaffer said. “I had no chance whatsoever. However, I am proud of myself because I never gave up and I definitely gave it everything I had.”
In doubles, Tonia and Janae lost, 2-6, 1-6, Palmer and Ortiz lost, 1-6, 1-6. No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, lost, 3-6, 2-6.
Head coach George Freeman acknowledged the proficient play of the Bakersfield Christian team.
“That is the best tennis team I have ever coached against in any division and any school in my 20 years of coaching,” Freeman said. “Prior to my match they had not lost against any team from Sacramento to Bakersfield. Regardless, each one of my girls played their hearts out all the way to the end.”
CIF TOURNAMENT POSTPONED on Nov. 1
Due to rain there was a two hour delay for CIF tournament on Nov 1. Though Brittany Shaffer, ’09 started her match she was later forced to stop because the rain started up again.
“It was really frustrating because not only did we have to start two hours later,” Shaffer said, “But while we were in the middle of the match we had to stop a few times before they just called the game.”
Shaffer’s match score was 4-6, 3-4, when play concluded.
Both of the doubles players were just about to start their matches when the officials told them that they had to call the game.
The tournament will start back up again from where it left off on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m.
SHAFFER WINS NO. 1 SINGLES IN WSL, Oct. 25
In the WSL individual tournament, Brittany Shaffer, ’09, dominated, beating Caruther’s Abigail Guzman, 8-3, Fowler’s Ana Plumed, 8-0, and Caruther’s Felicia Chavez, 6-1, 6-1, Oct. 25.
“It was really awesome winning No. 1 singles in the league,” Shaffer said. “I won this my sophomore year and last year I won No. 2 singles but I remember it being much more challenging than it was this year.”
Victoria HIndes, ’12, also made it to the WSL tournament but lost to Chavez, 5-8.
“I was disappointed to lose but it was a great expierience,” Hindes said. “I did my best and that’s all I can really do. I am pretty excited for playoffs though.”
Both of FC’s doubles teams made it to the final round and ended up playing against each other in the finals.
Kristina Palmer, ’09, and Megan Ortiz, ’09 beat Riverdale’s Albizu and Lopez, 8-2, Caruther’s Gonzalez and Mendoza, 8-3, then fellow teammates, Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, and Dolly Mizner, ’12, 6-0, 5-7, 8-6.
“It was really exciting playing Janae and Dolly in the finals,” Palmer said. “The whole game was full of laughs, and it really didn’t feel like a competition.”
While Keys-Bramlett and Mizner lost in the finals, they still managed to beat Riverdale’s Munguia and Morgan, 8-4, and Fowler’s Kaur and Vick, 8-3.
“It was really cool winning No. 2 doubles in the whole league,” Mizner said. “Especially since I’m only a freshman.”
The Eagle’s who medaled will move on to play in the CIF 1st round tournament.
The team will play on Oct. 29 against Fowler at home for their 1st playoff game.
FC GOES UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE, Oct. 21
Before the Eagles played their last league match, each one of the six seniors was honored by their fellow teammates, parents, and coach George Freeman. After this ceremony the girls beat Riverdale, 9-0 on Oct. 23.
In singles, Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-2, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, won, 8-3, No. 4 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 5 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won, 8-2.
“I had some mixed emotions about our last match,” Shaffer said. “It was really exciting playing our last league match, bit it was kind of sad at the same time. I am going to miss playing with my teammates so much. I have played with some of these girls for 6 years.”
In doubles, Palmer and Ortiz’s match went back and forth, eventually going into tie-breaker which Palmer and Ortiz won, 8-7, (7-3).
“The match was very close because Megan and I are still getting used to playing with eachother,” Palmer said. “I think we played really well though and I am so excited that we were able to win in the end.”
The Keys-Bramlett twins won, 8-1, and No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, won, 8-3 in the other 2 double article.
“This final match clinches another undefeated season in league play,” Freeman said. “The girls finished strong which we hope will give us some momentum into the playoffs on Wednesday. The highlight of the match actually happened before the match when each of the seniors were honored. I give thanks for Mrs. Palmer, there were some wonderful flower arrangements for each of the seniors.”
The Eagles will play their first playoff game, Oct. 29.
FC DEFEATS BRONCOS, Oct. 21
After an hour and a half bus ride to Dos Palos, the Eagles stretched out the cramps and defeated the Broncos 9-0, Oct. 21.
In singles FC did not drop any matches for the ninth time this season. No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-1, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, won, 8-0. No. 4 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won, 8-1, No. 5 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-1, No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won, 8-1.
Palmer ran off the court estatic when she realized she had won the Terminator Award for the second time this season.
“I was so excited when I found out that I was the first to win,” Palmer said. “I have only won one or two this year and so it was really cool that I was able to get another one near the end of our season.”
In doubles, Tonia and Janae won, 8-1, Palmer and Ortiz won, 8-3. No. 7 Victoria HIndes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, won, 8-2.
“Winning a match by only allowing the other team 9 games, is a tremendous achievement,” head coach George Freeman said. “The girls are now looking fowad to playing their last league match on Thursday and then going to Chipotle for dinner.”
EAGLES DISPATCH REDCATS, Oct. 16
Despite a few close matches, the Eagles prevail 9-0 verses league rival Fowler High, Oct. 16
Besides No. 5 Janae Keys-Bramlett’s 8-0 win, the singles matches were closer than FC expected.
Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won 8-2, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, 8-4, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, 8-2, No. 4 Megan Ortiz, ’09, 8-6 in the longest match of the day, and No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, 8-2.
“We played such a long match,” Ortiz said. “I was winning 5-2 early, but then she caught me, and it was a close match the rest of the way. I was so glad I was able to come back and get the win.”
In an attempt to rest his star player, head coach George Freeman let Shaffer decide if she wanted to play doubles or not.
“It was a little strange not playing doubles,” Shaffer said. “It’s not that I didn’t want to play, but I just knew that it was best for the team that I stepped down from doubles.”
The new No. 1 doubles team, Tonia and Janae won, 8-4, Palmer and an exhausted Ortiz won, 8-2, and Freshmen No. 7 Victoria Hindes, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner won, 8-3.
“Fowler is the second toughest team in our league,” Freeman said. “They are well coached and play all out. It was great watching our girls rise to the occasion and defeat them so decisively.”
FC KEEP STREAK ALIVE AGAINST BLUE RAIDERS, Oct. 14
The girls’ continued their 7-game winning streak by beating Caruthers 9-0, Oct 14.
“The girls started off the second round of league play with a very decisive victory against Caruthers,” head coach, George Freeman, said. “We hope to continue this aggressive style of play through out the rest of the league and into the playoffs.”

“I was having a rough day of tennis but I was able to squeak it out in the end,” Tonia said. “I’ve learned that when matches get close, I just have to keep my head clear and focus on one shot at a time.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Tonia collected an 8-1 win, Palmer and Ortiz won, 8-1, and No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12 finished off their opponents, 8-2.
“It was really awesome to win the Terminator award again,” Janae said. “I was having a great tennis day and it was really refreshing.”
TRANQUILLITY FORFEITS, Oct 9
Due to their decision to attend the Big Fresno Fair, Tranquillity officials told head coach George Freeman that they would forfeit the match, giving the win to the Eagles.
FC DISPATCHES COWBOYS, Oct. 7
After traveling 45 minutes to Riverdale, the Eagles defeated the Cowgirls, 9-0, Oct. 7.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, and No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett both won 8-0. No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09 won 8-1, No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09 won 8-0, No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won 8-2, No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won 8-5.
By not losing a point, Tonia earned the Terminator award for the first time this season.
“I haven’t won the terminator all year,” Tonia said, “It was really awesome winning it today.”
FC finished by sweeping all their doubles matches, with Shaffer and Palmer winning, 8-0, Tonia and Janae, 8-1, and No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12 and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, 8-0.
“The girls were at the top of their game yesterday hitting every shot possible in route to another Sequoia League victory,” head coach, George Freeman, said. “It was a great way to end the first round of play as we start our second round against Tranquillity on Thursday.”
FC DOMINATES DOS PALOS, Oct. 2
No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, not only won the Terminator Award, but she won her match in 25 mins, 8-1. The eagles won, 9-0, on Oct. 2.
In other singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, won, 8-2. No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-1, No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, 8-1.
“It was so awesome to win the Terminator again,” Volpa-Olsen said. “I was looking around to see everyone’s score and was super stoked when I found out that I won.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-1, Tonia and Janae won, 8-0. No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, won, 8-4.
“The girls won a totaly of 72 games to their 10,” head coach, George Freeman, said. “This was an amazing victory for the girls.”
REDCATS NO MATCH FOR EAGLES, Sept. 30
In dominating fashion, FC defeated Fowler, 9-0, Sept. 30, to keep their 11 year winning streak against the Redcats alive.
The match results of this followed a similar pattern to the last 11 years, as the team has not dropped a match to Fowler since 1997.
Led by No. 1 Brittany Shaffer’s 8-5 singles win, the host Eagles coasted to an easy victory.
The supporting cast held strong with No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, and the every other singles player winning their respective matches.
“This was actually one of my tougher matches,” Shaffer said. “I started off losing by two but I was able to come back and win.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won a close one, 8-7, (7-1), Tonia and Janae came through, 8-1, and No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, pulled out another win, 8-5.
“Since we have not lost to Fowler since 1997, I have a particular expectation when we play them,” head coach, George Freeman, said. “Their record is 8-2 which means they are a very good team and yet our girls rose to the occasion to win by a perfect score. Fowler is by far the best team we have played in league in a long time.”
FC WIN STREAK CONTINUES, Sept. 25
Shortly after claiming their first league win over Tranquillity, the Eagles defeated Caruthers, 8-1, for their second, Sept. 25.
No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, landed her first Terminator Award, as she won her match minutes before teamate Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, finished off her opponent.
“It was so awesome getting the Terminator,” Ortiz said. “Janae usually gets off way before I do, so it was really exciting to beat her today.”
In other singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won 8-1, Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won 8-5, and Kristina Palmer, ’09, won 8-1. Making it off the court second was Janae after winning, 8-0.
No. 7, Victoria Hindes ’12, recently moved up to the No. 6 spot, but lost in a tie-breaker, 7-8, (4-7).
“The girls have improved a lot over the past few matches in the area of ball placement,” head coach, George Freeman, said. “Precision hitting was the key of our victory over Caruthers.”
In doubles, FC dominated as Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-0, Tonia and Janae won, 8-1. No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, and No. 9 Annie Johnson, ’12, won 8-4.
FC EARNS FIRST LEAGUE VICTORY, Sept. 23
Despite missing two girls due to illness, FC defeated Tranquillity in their first league match. No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won her first Terminator Award while playing in the No. 5 spot. The girls won, 9-0, Sept 23.
The singles matches went smoothly with No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, winning 8-0, No. 2 Kristina Palmer, ’09, 8-1, No. 3 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won 8-0. No. 4 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won 8-1, No. 6 Victoria Hindes, ’12, won 8-0.
“It was really exciting to get the Terminator,” Volpa-Olsen said. “I ran off the court yelling and jumping because I was so pumped.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer delivered an 8-2 victory, and Ortiz and Volpa-Olsen won as well, 8-2.
Freshman Dolly Mizner and Annie Johnson also won in dominating fashion, 8-1.
“It was so nice to play a less intense match for a change,” head coach George Freeman said, “This match was less challenging than the previous two matches at coast.”
FC BEATS COAST UNION, Sept. 20
After a devastating loss to Mission Prep, the girls took out their aggression on Coast Union, 7-2, Sept 20.
FC started strong in singles as No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won 8-5, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-3, and No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, won, 8-1.
Unlike the previous match, the bottom half of the Eagles’ rotation held strong with the wins of No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, 8-1, No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, 8-5, and No. 6 Haley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, 8-6.
“I honestly believe that we played our best tennis of the season against Coast,” head coach, George Freeman, said, “and it showed with a 7-2 victory.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer lost, 3-8, Tonia and Janae won, 8-5. No. 7 Vicoria Hindes, ’12, and No. 8 Dolly Mizner, ’12, lost, 7-8, (5-7).
MISSION PREP DOMINATES FC, Sept. 19
After a three hour drive, the Eagles’ team pulled into the Mission Prep parking lot, excited to hit the court.
However, panic set in when Brittany Shaffer, ’09, realized that her ankle brace was back in Fresno. Perservering in the face of difficulty, Shaffer won her match, 8-1, but it was not enough to spur FC on to victory, as they fell, 2-7, to the Royals, Sept. 19.
“When the team went to change for the match I realized that I forgot my brace, and was not going to be able to play without it,” Shaffer said. “I was a mess, crying and everything. Fortunately Kristina’s (Palmer ’09) mom took me to Sports Authority to buy a new one before my match.”
Aside from Shaffer’s win, the Eagles lost each of the remaining 5 singles matches. No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, 2-8, Palmer lost, 0-8, and No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, 4-8. No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, lost, 3-8, and No. 6 Haley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, lost 4-8.
“The girls played their hearts out against Mission Prep,” head tennis coach, George Freeman, said. “That kind of effort is all I can ask of them.”
In doubles Shaffer and Palmer were defeated, 2-8, however the Keys-Bramlett twins came through with an 8-0 victory in their match.
In the final match, freshmen No. 7 Victoria Hindes and No. 8 Dolly Mizner lost, 3-8.
“The trip to the coast is more than just playing tennis,” Freeman said. “It’s an opportunity for the team to grow together in unity of purpose.”
EDISON BEATS FC BY ONE, Sept. 11
Unfortunately the Eagles’ lost No. 5 Megan Ortiz due to an injury the day before. However the girls played a close match against Edison and lost 5-4 to the Tigers on Sept. 11.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, lost, 5-8, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, 1-8, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, 5-8. No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, won, 8-4, No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, moved up to play the No. 5 spot and lost in the tie-breaker, 7-8, (5-7). JV player, Annie Johnson, ’12, also moved up to play the No. 6 spot and lost, 3-8.
“It was a heart breaking loss,” Tonia said, “because we got to duce every game and I only won once.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-2, Tonia and Janae won, 8-1. Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Dolly Mizner, ’12, won, 8-2.
“It was good to see the girls play so well against a Division II team,” George Freeman, head tennis coach, said. “Personally it was also nice to coach against a former FC student, Jennifer Beckman, who is now head tennis coach at Edison.”
FC DOMINATES YOSEMITE, Sept. 9
In their shortest match of the season so far, the Eagles defeated Yosemite by a score of, 9-0, Sept. 9. FC seized control of each match, ousting the Badgers in just over an hour.
Head coach George Freeman rewards the first player to win her match with the “terminator award.” The girl who wins this award chooses between numerous prizes such as a t-shirt or small trophy.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-0, while No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, and No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, both won, 8-2. In the same way No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-0, No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won, 8-1, and No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won, 8-0 to complete the sweep.
“Our team played a great match,” Janae said. “It was really exciting to win the terminator award once again.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-1, Tonia and Janae won, 8-0, and Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Dolly Mizner, ’12, won, 8-0.
“The girls exceeded my expectations in every aspect of their match,” Freeman said. “They played smart, worked hard, and now that two of my players are up for Homecoming candidates, they looked better than they have all year.”
FC DEFEATS RIVAL CVC, Sept. 4
After their loss against Immanuel, the Eagles proved themselves once again with a score of, 8-1, on Sept. 4.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-5, and Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, also came through with an 8-1 win while playing in the No. 2 slot. No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, and No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, both won their matches, 8-0, with No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, contributing an 8-3 win.
“CVC is truly a Christian team,” head coach George Freeman said. “Both teams prayed together before the match, and it was genuine.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-4, to improve their Tonia and Janae won, 8-2. No. 7 Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Holly Mizner, ’12, won 8-3.
“Their coach has one girl from their team pray before each match, and the girl, who’s turn it was to pray, prayed a prayer so full of the Holy Spirit, I almost, but didn’t, shouted ‘Praise God’,” Freeman said. “My girls talked about what a joy it was to play girls that were kind and considerate.”
After the match, Ortiz echoed the praise of her coach for the opposing team.
“This team was really great to play,” Ortiz said. “They were not only a good challenge for us but you could also tell that they were a Christian team.”
FC FALLS TO IMMANUEL, Sept. 2
After a 45 minute bus ride to Immanuel High in Reedley, FC lost, 3-6, on Sept. 2.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, won, 8-4 to remain undefeated in singles for the season. No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, and No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, lost, but No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won, 8-7 (7-5), and No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, lost, 2-8.
“Even though we lost against Immanuel we played well,” Ortiz said. “They were a good challenge for us in preparation for league.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer lost, 7-8 (4-7), Tonia and Janae won, 8-3. Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Dolly Mizner, ’12, lost, 5-8.
“The girls played their hearts out,” head coach George Freeman said, “They came close to defeating a very good division four team.”
EAGLES WIPE OUT CHIEFTAINS, Aug. 28
After their win against Liberty, the Eagles’ streak continued with a 9-0 victory over Sierra, Aug. 28.
In singles, No. 1 Brittany Shaffer ’09, won, 8-1, and No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 8-2. In backing up the solid play of their top players, Eagles’ No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, and No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, all won their matches.
“We all played really well against (division four) Sierra,” Janae said. “We were very consistent, and it payed off in the end.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-4, and Tonia and Janae won, 8-2. Similarly to the No. 1 doubles pair, Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Dolly Mizner,’12, won, 8-4
“They (Sierra) were up a division from us in division four,” head coach, George Freeman said. “For us to shut them out 9-0 us an incredible accomplishment.”
EAGLES START OFF STRONG, Aug. 26
The Eagles overcame first-match jitters to defeat former league rival Liberty-Madera Ranchos, 8-1.
The FC team comprised of 6 seniors, 1 sophomore, and 6 freshman grabbed the lead early and shut down the Hawks moral early in the match.
Led by No. 1 Brittany Shaffer, ’09, who endured a three-hour long match, eventually winning with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, FC lost one match to the Hawks.
“I played a really close match,” Shaffer said. “Ana (Sogonionin, ’09) and I were both very consistent, and the heat made it even more exhausting, but I’m really glad I was able to overcome all the obstacles and pull out the win.”
In other singles matches, No. 2 Tonia Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won, 6-1, 6-3; No. 3 Kristina Palmer, ’09, won, 3-6, 6-2, 8-6; No. 4 Janae Keys-Bramlett, ’09, won 6-0, 6-0; No. 5 Megan Ortiz, ’09, won due to a forfeit; and No. 6 Hayley Volpa-Olsen, ’09, won 6-3, 6-4.
“Beating a very strong senior-laden team was a great way to start off the season,” George Freeman, girls’ tennis coach, said. “They tested us, and we proved to be up to the challenge.”
In doubles, Shaffer and Palmer won, 8-6, and Tonia and Janae won, 8-1. Victoria Hindes, ’12, and Dolly Mizner, ’12, were in the lead, but lost in the end, 6-8.
“Even though we lost, it was our first game and I think we did pretty well,” Mizner said. “It was a great experience, and we hopefully will do better next time.”
