Eagle basketball will be on the radio for the first time when 1550 AM broadcasts their game vs. Orange Cove, Dec. 16.
“It means a lot to have them broadcast our games,” junior Tyler Revis said. “We’re strong this year and being on the radio will let the community know that. I expect to win and for us to get our name out in the community with a positive outlook.”
The grass roots local station, which features area high school football, basketball and baseball plus Fresno Pacific and Fresno City College events, worked out a contract with the school that will see them broadcast a total of five varsity boys’ and girls’ games. The games of both teams vs. Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo), Jan. 3, will be broadcast over the Christmas break.
“We have a new team this year than in the past,” senior Michael Raymer said. “The broadcast is a good way to let everyone know about the new Fresno Christian and that we can battle with anyone.”
The station produces a daily show, SportsLine, hosted by long-time sports broadcaster Tony D’addato. The show also includes more than 30 hours each week of sports talk, commentaries, interviews and insight with local players, coaches, athletic directors and one-on-one conversations with the big names in the world of sports.
Another of the station’s local channels, 96.1 FM, targets the Visalia/Tulare area as well.
“Last year, they approached us with an opportunity to broadcast the girls’ basketball final vs. Mission Prep at Selland Arena,” head boys’ basketball coach Chris Schultz said. “We raised some funds with various sponsors and it was a great success. From that experience, we spoke with them about the possibility of doing more games the following year.”
Both the boys’ and girls’ programs have received sufficient sponsorships to help cover the costs of airing the games.
The Eagles join Visalia’s Central Valley Christian (which has football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and baseball broadcasted by 1550 AM) with a similar package.
Head girls’ basketball coach Josh Tosland will join Schultz on the Sportsline morning show each week highlighting their teams and upcoming games.
