Although some band members stick to the routine of march, practice and perform, sophomore Sydney Carlson broke the cycle and auditioned for honor band as a fresh challenge.
The participants in Fresno Madera County Honor Band, chosen from all over the county by audition, attended three rehearsals in one week and performed their new music, Jan. 31. The students played college-level music.
Though she already practices two hours a day and plays percussion in the campus concert and jazz bands, Carlson felt more challenged in honor band.
Carlson received third chair in honor band. Although Carlson though participating in the group was challenging, she loves being able to play her instrument in order to further her goals, she said.
“My favorite part of honor band is playing my instrument [percussion],” Carlson said, “because I want to become a percussionist when I grow up. Also, I’ve made a lot of great friends in the band.”
Band director Jimmy Loomis considers Carlson a leader through commitment, dedication and setting the tone for both the concert and jazz band, he said.
“She takes it upon herself to invest in learning outside of class and she wants to understand the music,” Loomis said. “She is probably the most dedicated [student] and has a very promising career in percussion.”
Carlson has taken piano lessons for six years, drum lessons for five years and is in her first year of percussion lessons, involving a diverse range of percussive instruments.
Carlson’s favorite part of playing percussion is being able to “drive the band,” keeping the marching band in step by playing the snare, and keeping the beat on a drum set for a jazz piece, she said.
“I really love just playing my heart out and getting into the music,” Carlson said. “I like the way it feels and it’s a fun, on-top-of-the-world feeling.”
Not only does Carlson play in three bands, she has played percussion in the Youth Orchestra of Fresno for two years. She is also involved in the campus California Scholarship Federation (CSF) chapter and the Spanish Club.
“During my spare time I like to read, hang out with my friends,” Carlson said, “and play my instruments. I play music all the time.”
