For the third year in a row, the girls’ basketball team will make an appearance in the CIF Valley Championship game at Selland Arena against Coast Union, March 6.
The West Sequoia League Champion Eagles went 20-5 overall in the regular season and undefeated in league play. They proceeded to eliminate Central Valley Christian 63-52 in quarter finals, March 3.
From the beginning of the season, the team has said its goal is the Valley Championship. Having faced the sting of two consecutive losses at Selland, the players look to reverse the tide this time around against an opponent they have already defeated.
Their adversary, the Broncos of Coast Union, boast a 19-6 overall record and a two-game win streak. In the last match-up between the two finalists, the Eagles prevailed with a 56-38 victory, Jan. 2.
“We know we will have to play much better if we want a shot at the title,” head coach Josh Tosland said. “It is going to be a battle, that is for sure.”
FC will look for leadership from their consistent top players; senior point guard Larissa Hensley and center Paige Armstrong-Maltos, ’10.
Hensley leads the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game and 4.5 steals, while Armstrong-Maltos averages 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Campus students are encouraged to attend the event; the rooter bus is scheduled to leave FC at 1 p.m., returning around 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost $8 for students and $11 for adults. FC “spiritwear” is encouraged.
