Most kids spend their days in designated classrooms learning about politics, quadratic formulas and novels. However, the video production students use their surroundings both inside and outside the classroom to create film pieces that aim to entertain peers.
This year a few short films have been nominated for the Get Reel Film Festival. This competition is comprised of all schools in Fresno County. The judges look specifically for the best short films produced by video production students.
The competition applicants range from 13 to 22 years old. There are six different categories: documentary, commercial, music video, feature short, animation and a possible commercial for the Educational Employees Credit Union. The winners from each category will earn up to $500.
The Fresno Christian nominees are “Guerilla Advertising,” “The Day the Server Went Down,” “A Day in the Life of a Pencil,” “Delivery Dash,” “Dr. Bail,” and a school favorite, “Butterfly.” All these videos can be viewed on The Feather Online’s video page. The viewer will need to scroll through the section to find each piece. The video section can be found on the right menu bar, near the top.
Senior Tyler Duerr is excited for his work on “A Day in the Life of a Pencil” to get the credit he feels it deserves.
“Out of all the videos that Kyser [Anderson, ’12] and I had ever produced, this is the one we’ve looked hardest on,” Duerr said. “I hope I win because we worked hard on it. If I win the cash, I’m going to use the money to buy more flannel shirts.”
Senior Paige Powell was not expecting to be a part of the contest this year. Just weeks before the entry deadline she did not have any specific works to enter into the competition. Secretly, video productions teacher Scott Callisch entered a past work that was suited to the event. He then surprised her with the news after it had already been entered.
“I was shocked to hear the great news!” Powell said. “I am so happy to be a part of this.”
Junior Zach Camden, although not nominated, says he is proud to be a member of the class.
“I think it’s great that the video productions class is getting honored for what they do,” Camden said. “The videos are great and, instead of sports teams, this time the video productions class is being recognized. It’s awesome!”
The festival will take place in Tower Theater in Fresno, Dec. 5.
Callisch encourages campus students to attend the event. Videos will be screened at 3 p.m., and the awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
“If you want to go see some great student films and support the school, it would be great to attend,” Callisch said.
