Bible study fuels faith

This summer, while hanging out with friends and going to the beach, I realized how much I missed our weekly chapels at school. The more I thought about it, the more I wished there were more chances to get together and spend time with God and other students.

Last year at lunch on Thursdays a group of students, led by senior Janae Ford, got together and sang worship songs. It was a great chance to step away from the stress of school and praise God.

During the summer, some students and FC alumni met together in various parks for a time of worship. Those involved expressed a desire to continue worship meetings during the school year.

I spent a few weeks praying and asking God what he wanted of me for this school year. I felt like God was telling me that I needed to do something that would make an impact and “grow him” on campus.

Following this thought I sent Bible teacher Robert Foshee an e-mail asking his thoughts on starting a student-lead Bible study. After receiving his support, I decided to start the group.

Since then, every Wednesday at 7 a.m. a few students including myself have met in the Ground Zero cafe. We start the time with sophomore Josh Hopper leading us in worship on his guitar, followed by a prayer. We then take time to read a passage or two of Scripture and discuss the material.

I asked Hopper to lead us in worship because I know that he has a great love for God. I knew that with his help we could make sure that this was a God-centered time.

We hope to soon have some people share their personal testimonies and open the floor up to whatever people want to share. We close this time with prayer requests and collective prayer.

So often it’s easy to focus on what the bad things are in our lives. We often lose focus on what it is that God wants us to do.

Having a chance to start the day with fellow students all getting focused on God is such an encouragement. It is a blessing to see the love of God at work in other students’ lives.

When trying to get people to attend, the most common response I have received is “it’s too early.” However, an early morning Bible study can be beneficial because it gets your mindset focused on God and what he wants of you for the day.

After starting my day with focusing on God I notice that I have been more friendly towards classmates. It has also been easier to remember that God is always with me.

While chapels are great ways to praise the Lord, it can seem easy to get lost in the shuffle. Some times I feel like I wish I had had a chance to share or had someone to listen and pray with during chapel.

At this Bible study everyone has a chance to express their own feelings and share what they may need prayer for.

One Wednesdays we spent the time just sharing our favorite Bible verses and what they meant to us. It gave an insight into the lives of the those who shared that we usually would not have seen.

Wednesday Bible study has fulfilled what I was missing this summer. I hope more people will join in this amazing activity.

For those interested, the Wednesday morning Bible study meets at 7 a.m. each Wednesday in the Ground Zero cafe. For more information, e-mail Foshee.
