As a senior captain and spiritual leader on the football team, I feel led to speak about homecoming and my feelings about FCS.
I want to talk about this because I feel like that night changed things in our school and on our team. I felt an impact from the Holy Spirit when a multitude of people gathered on the field and sang our victory song with us. I felt like it took us one step closer as school that desires to be unified.
Against Riverdale we did what we do for every team, and that is after practice pray together as a team for their team, town and anything else that is on our hearts. This game was special because coach Dana Menard (Riverdale coach) is best friends with coach Bonner Cunnings, so it had that personal feel like the Stoneridge game.
Here’s what happened: our team was playing selfish! At half time, the Lord revealed to us the blocks and chains holding us back from success. We were not bringing Him glory. Our hearts were not set on worship nor ministering to a lost Riverdale team. It’s not FC football, nor a Christian lifestyle.
Our team, your team, do not play to represent ourselves, but Christ who is alive in all of us and for our school, took authority through prayer by casting out the demonic presences messing with our minds. This football team, led by the Holy Spirit, represents what our school is all about. We need to rely solely on the Lord and bring glory to Him in all situations.
Now its after halftime and our team has a new heart. A heart set on worship. Chants of, “who’s house is this?…” and response of “God’s house!” We knew our focus.
How does this team represent our school? Because we as a school are re-focused, renewed and are breeding a New Legacy. The Lord opened my eyes to a “New Legacy” in game one, against Stoneridge. Calling out this year’s senior class (2010); it’s our job to set this legacy.
Our goal for the season is to glorify God, and we use every chance we get to spread the gospel. We want to make it to the Valley championship so that people will hear the message even better. My goal, and I think the others are in agreement, is to use football to represent the “new” in our school. This is the new revival, a new spark; it is a transformation that only comes from the Lord.
F.C has seen its struggle; we have had our backs against the wall; been down 0-15, felt lost and confused, but has not the Lord worked all things for good? Diamonds are only formed under the highest of pressure and gold can only be purified when put through fire. Eagle football, which is nothing in the big scheme of things, mounted its comeback because they turned to the Lord. Do not give up the hope that we stand on, which is the rock who is our Lord Jesus Christ.
I do feel a sense of ownership (for the school) because it’s my senior year and it means so much to me (students, teachers, sports). There’s such a close attachment between my heart and here.
FC can go as deep into the Lord as we desire. Homecoming showed us how we are becoming unified as One body, One mind and One spirit.
The football team asks for your prayers and support as we try to play for more than ourselves.
