As the intimidation and concentration rises for sign-ups, girls and coaches of all classes prepare for the annual powder puff football game. Each class will fight for the championship, Nov. 24.
The competition, held on the north field, will facilitate a half-day schedule. Each class will wear class-specifics T-shirts to identify their grade. The freshman class will be up against the seniors, as the sophomores will face the juniors.
Student leadership will organize powder puff this year.
“I believe it is a very fun activity,” leadership adviser Robert Foshee said. “I have been a referee for 10 years and it is great to see the girls motivated again.”
With a total of four games, each class will play two. The final game will distinguish bragging rights for another year. The losers of the first two games will decide the ultimate loser.
“I am very confident we will win,” Julio Ibarra, a coach for the seniors said. “We have a dynamic offense and aggressive defense. I feel coaching will be a great experience; the senior girls need a great leader and I can fill that void.”
Practices will be held during lunch Nov. 18-20 and Nov. 23. Therefore, the coaches will he held responsible to establish their team and plan their strategy.
“The only things coaches are worried about are getting teenage girls to have their undivided attention and to keep them focused,” Ibarra said.
The senior class won the homecoming float competition and hopes for a second victory.
“Participating in powder puff is a chance to play something that is usually considered a guys’ sport,” senior Paige Maltos said. “I love the intimidation, and I am ready for the seniors to dominate…again. Crushing the freshman will definitely be my highlight!”
While some underclassmen are intimidated by their older opponents, others are undaunted in their pursuit of the prize.
“I am not afraid to play against the seniors at all,” freshman Katherine Barisic said. “I already live with a senior so I am used to intimidation. Having women play football is a nice alternative to tradition roles. I am excited about how everything will turn out this year!”
Clamoring from the sidelines, male cheerleaders will attempt to whoop up the onlookers. Many are excited to cheer the girls on as they switch conventioal roles for an afternoon.
Freshman Kevin Thao says he is excited for the cheer portion of the event.
“Practicing the dancing will be fun part!” Thao said. “It will be a great experience to have with my friends. I am looking forward to it.”
