Every Christmas, children and adults alike often gather to watch a holiday film, share a meal and exchange gifts. Due to these and other holiday traditions, nostalgic memories may kindle in their hearts even as fresh one’s develop. After asking several students about their Christmas break, The Feather Online recounts various responses to classic Christmas flicks and how they fit into holiday memories.
Sophomore Victoria Hindes:
My family has a tradition in which we watch The Nativity Story together on Christmas Eve. We think it is a really good movie, but after seeing it so many times we are able to quote the entire movie. This past year when we were at our cabin, we snuggled up in warm blankets as it began to snow. I love watching the snowfall, so I remember the snow falling and watching the movie with my family.
Sophomore Brandi Thompson:
As a young child, I watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas with my whole family the night before Christmas. This movie is memorable, because every year my sisters come over for Christmas and cuddle with me as we watch the movie. This is a great time for us because we always end up laughing throughout the entire film. It is funny when the Grinch realizes Christmas isn’t bad and learns to like it. It is also sad when the Grinch is all alone.
Junior Bridget Teixeira:
I remember watching Miracle on 34th Street in my living room with my family during Christmas. We watched the movie on a very cold and dark day, while we drank hot chocolate. This is a nice family memory for me because we were content being in eachother’s presence without talking, just watching a movie. I love this movie because it is cute and the Santa Claus character is especially good.
Sophomore Domenic Tedeschi:
I watch A Christmas Story every year with my family before we eat dinner. My favorite part is when Santa Claus kicks the boy down the slide. This tradition is memorable in our family, because it is a fun time of year to spend time together. We always end up laughing and having a great time together.
Math teacher Jane Gillespie:
Every year my family watches Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase. My whole family sits together over the weekend, eats leftovers and laughs together at all the funny parts. My mom usually starts laughing a few moments before something actually funny happen. This is a tradition I hope we always keep!
Sophomore Austin Rurik:
My favorite Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life because the main character George Bailey parallels my life almost verbatim. The man puts others above himself. The movie gives me courage to overcome fear, and not be afraid to take on others. Also, the movie helps me appreciate life and family, because Bailey in the presence of an angel wishes he had never been born. When his wish comes true, Bailey realizes how good his life really was. When he finally gets back to life, his family is again loved and he is happy.
Seventh grader Maddy Crum:
Last year on Christmas day I went to the movies with my family and friends. We saw Yes Man, which was extremely hilarious. For the previous three years our family has made it a tradition to watch a movie on Christmas day.
I remember last year it was really annoying because the theater was very crowded and some kid kept kicking the back of our seat! Despite the disturbance, I still enjoyed being with my family and friends during the holidays and look forward to this Christmas.
Whether it be sitting on the coach watching a “feel-good” flick or heading to the theaters to see a new motion picture, many students have their own Christmas traditions and favorite movies. However, as Christmas provides time to reminisce, often loved ones and the original reason for celebration color memories and tradition.
