After practicing for three hours two to three times a week, including morning practices, the winterguard team has only one show-championships-left, March 26.
The team will perform at 6:56 p.m., right after Arroyo Grande High School, at Clovis North Educational Center. They will judged against six other schools.
The small team will now have their last chance to command a spot in the top three of their division. Captain Jessica Massie says she is confident in the show.
“Everyone worked so hard,” Massie said. “I am really hoping we get in the top three, but even if we do not, I am so proud of all the girls. All season they worked so hard. We had amazing shows, and we had not-so-amazing shows, but even after the not-so-amazing ones, they did not let that get them down.”
Despite some disappointments, including a last place finish, Massie says the team did not get discouraged.
“They just took all the disappointment from the last show and turned it into dedication during practices,” Massie said. “I hope the judges see how hard all the girls have worked, and even if we do not get top three, they will at least see a huge improvement from the beginning of the year.”
Despite rough spots during the year, coach Lacey Miranda says she is expecting big things out of the team for this show.
“In order to do better in the next show, we have been working on a lot of things,” Miranda said. “We have been working on small things like hand placement, timings, performance and making everything really flow together.”
Miranda says her expectations have risen since the last show.
“I am expecting everything to be so much better and I think that the judges are as well, so I hope to please them,” she said. “I am dreading drops, but every coach does. However, last show we had a record of no drops, which really boosted the girls’ confidence. If they do happen, I just hope that the girls will recover quickly and perform even more.”
This will be the last show of the season until the annual end-of-the-year show, where they write and perform a whole new routine, as well as perfect and perform the current one.
Tickets to the March 26 performance are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
