On their way to their second-to-last show of the year, the winterguard team will compete at Clovis East, March 12. They will be second to perform in their division, right after Hanford and before Golden West, who took first in the last show. They will go on at 7:09 p.m.
Coach Lacey Miranda says she has been working hard to prepare everyone for this show.
“In order to excel in the next show, we have been working on a lot of things,” Miranda said. “We have been working on small things like hand placement, timings and making everything really flow together.
“I am expecting everything to be so much better and I think that the judges are as well, so I hope to please them. I am dreading drops, but every coach does. If they happen, I just hope that the girls will recover quickly and perform even more.”
In order to improve from their last show, the team had practices every day after school and even dedicated some mornings to 7 a.m. practices. Captain Jessica Massie, ’11, says she is expecting much more from this show.
“I am so much more confident for this show,” Massie said. “We worked so hard and I am really hoping that it shows this time. In our last show, some girls were really nervous and we had a ton of new work and not everyone was confident with all the work. However, this time I am fully confident with the girls this time.”
As a captain, Massie says she has a sense of ownership for the team and its efforts.
“They all work so hard and deserve to be recognized and awarded,” Massie said. “All of our girls have amazing talent and I think they deserve so much more than last place. The first place guard is good, I am not going to deny that, but I think we can at least get second or third. I believe in the girls, and so do the parents and people who come to our shows to support us.”
Since the last show, Ileana See, ’14, says that she and the other girls have been working extra hard in order to perform better than the last show, in which they were named last-place finishers.
“I think this show will go way better,” See said. “We have all been working really hard. I believe that our hard work will really show this time and that everything we have learned will really show and the adrenaline will kick in.”
After their performance at Clovis East, the guard will begin to prepare for their championship show at Clovis North, March 26. The time of performance will be announced at a later time.
