In order to offset the overall cost of trips the music students will take, the music department has initiated a new fundraiser dubbed “music muffins.” The program sells a variety of Costco muffins along with croissants and assorted beverages for $1.
Officers of the Tri-M Music Honor Society — an international honor society for secondary music students — arrive at 7 a.m. in front of the main entrance to Building 6 to set up and prepare for prospective buyers.
“Getting to school at seven to sell muffins is no big deal for me,” Will Gonzales, ’11, said. “I have a zero period and have to take my little sister to school for her zero period too.”
This fundraiser serves as the program’s alternative to making and selling meals at lunch time. Music director Michael Ogdon started this sale as a simple way for kids to raise money.
“The music program wants to provide a service for the students,” Ogdon said. “We are also calling the students to support a school-wide program. We don’t want to compete with anyone, and that’s why we aren’t selling at lunches or at the 10-minute break. I feel like we are stepping into a gap that needed to be filled.”
The muffin sales are expected to appeal to the student population, as students may rush to school in the morning without breakfast. Others, such as freshman Joshua Thao, purchase the muffins to improve their day.
“I buy three muffins every day,” Thao said. “I eat one at 10-minute break, one at lunch, and I save the last for after school. The muffins really help me get through the day, and they benefit the school and the customer.”
The music muffins will be sold indefinitely by different representatives of music groups. For more information, e-mail Michael Ogdon.

I was so proud of the Jazz Band’s performance at the Carol Sing. Incredible atmosphere, wonderful sound.
