Rather than spend a typical day at school, FC students have the opportunity to board a bus and follow the JV and varsity football teams to their game against Coast Union High School in Cambria, Oct. 1.
After attending their first class of the day, students may board the buses at 10 a.m. Upon arrival, everyone will be dismissed to eat an independent lunch. Soon after, student leadership plans to begin optional structured events held on the beach.
As the events come to a close, beach trip participants will be shuttled to the Coast Union football field to watch the JV game kick off at 5 p.m.
“I’m excited because most schools don’t ever go to support the JV team,” JV guard Grant Flammang, ’14, said. “But at this school they treat varsity and JV evenly.”
The varsity game begins at 7 p.m. Afterward everyone will hop on the bus and head back to school. The caravan should arrive on campus at 1 a.m., where parents of high schoolers unable to drive will pick up their student.
The fee for the entire trip is $25, which pays for the bus and entry to the field. The money is payable to the office upon signing up. This event is first come, first serve, due to the capacity of the buses.
Student body president Justin Wilson, ’11, went on the trip as a freshman and now recommends that students participate.
“I have never met anyone who hasn’t had an amazing time,” Wilson said. “The weather is great, and being on a road trip with your friends while watching your team play is so much fun.”
Leadership adviser and beach trip coordinator Robert Foshee views the trip as a good way to build camaraderie among students.
“It’s an all-school road trip where the students create fun memories and watch the game together,” Foshee said. “We have as large a crowd for this away game as Coast Union does for their home game. It’s cool to watch the wave of our students filling the stands.”
Although the beach trip had been held annually for many years, there was a two-year gap between this trip and the last. Senior Kelsey Gunner regretted her decision not to participate the last time the trip was offered her freshman year.
“I didn’t go because I didn’t think it would be that important or a big deal,” Gunner said. “Who knew that there wouldn’t be another one until my senior year, I guess I didn’t have much school spirit. Now I can and want to go and have a great time with everyone.”
However, some students prefer to stay on campus during the game.
“Honestly, I am not going because I really don’t like the beach,” Brandon Porter, ’13, said. “I hate bus rides with a passion and I just don’t find stuff like this very fun.”

Great photo. Sorry I wasn’t there (band, choir, Ukulele Club). I’m sure you did great.
