Dear editor:
I’m very excited that I was voted as student body president because I have a lot of great ideas to share with my peers. I want to serve my students as a brother in Christ and as someone they can count on for help. I was nervous at first that I wouldn’t make my peers happy with my actions, but now after a lot of thought and prayer, I know I can be the leader this school needs to be a shining light throughout the Valley.
So far in student leadership, we have talked a lot about plans for this year. Our main objective is to make sure we take in all the students’ ideas and narrow them down to what will be the best interest for everybody.
One of the things we are working to make great at our school is pep rallies. We have a decent-sized budget this year for decorations and other necessities. We have already planned fun themes and games that everyone can get involved in.
One big achievement this year is that Fresno Chistian has a home football field. We are discussing how we can make the games so exciting that kids from public schools around Fresno come just to see us. It’s a huge blessing that we were able to receive donations that helped to give us our own football field.
Even though we love to have fun and do awesome activities, we also don’t forget to focus on service projects and worshiping God in chapel. We have a great worship team during chapel, and also incorporate funny and interesting videos about the school or just about life into the fellowship time we share.
Even though we have a separate time for chapels, we feel, especially as a leadership team, that our actions should speak our faith, not just words. Our leadership team will be participating in service projects throughout the year to give back to the community around us. We feel that, as people of God, serving others is what we are called to do as leaders.
When I talk to friends outside of school, they talk about how they don’t want to go to Fresno Christian because it’s either too small, has bad sports or that we’re too religious. I come back with the same argument every time: Even though our high school only consists of about 190 students, it’s nice because we are like a close family, and I can name almost eveyone I see. Sure, other schools have a few thousand students, but they usually are not close with one another, and don’t have a close-knit family bond like we do.
When I hear people say that FC is too religious, I get confused because I wonder why others wouldn’t want to worship the God who gave us everything we have. This school encourages not a religious belief system, but a faith. We as students choose to come before the Lord because our faith is in Him. I am so grateful to be at a school like this, and I want other people to want to come here for upcoming years.
When it comes to sports, we continue to build off of the 2009-10 season. The football team made it to the playoffs for the first time in over six years, girls’ basketball and volleyball teams both made it to state playoffs, the cheer squad got 3rd at USA Nationals out of 27 other teams, baseball was one round away from the Division-V championship, boys’ basketball had a great season with only one game away from making the Division-V championship and cross-country was represented at the state level. Yes, our sports are small, but clearly we perform well with the great athletes and coaches we have.
We have an awesome leadership team this year and I am thrilled for what is to come. With the experience of my vice president, [senior] Bree Ainley, and other leadership representatives, I know that it will be a year to remember. We all work very well together and are willing to compromise and go above and beyond, so that, as a result, our peers feel proud and blessed to go to such a school as Fresno Christian.
