One day each year, students have the opportunity to spend class with their grandparents on campus.
For the 19th annual Grandparents Day, hundreds of elders will accompany their grandchildren during the morning and enjoy a prepared lunch in the Peoples Church Gym, Sept. 24.
Grandparents who plan to attend should arrive on campus by 9:30 a.m.
Superintendent Debbie Siebert, academic adviser Molly Sargent and IT director David Martens have arranged the event and meal. In addition, members of the California Scholarship Federation and AP English students will volunteer their time to set up the gym, serve lunch and direct grandparents.
Ever since Angie Fries’ grandchildren, junior Zed, freshman Tynin, eighth grader Callista and their first grade cousin, Kennedy, have been at the school, she has attended Grandparents Day.
“I like seeing what my grandchildren are doing and learning in school,” Fries said. “I like knowing their friends too. It’s important to not only know about the school, but about the students who attend and the activities going on.”
Although junior Julianne King enjoyed her grandmother’s visit in junior high, she feels that Grandparents Day appeals more to younger students.
“Grandparents Day can be fun, but I am not a big fan of it,” King said. “Personally, I think it’s more for elementary kids. The elementary kids get more involved in their class, and the lunch is much more kid-friendly. High school students just drag their grandparents around for the free lunch.”
