For a coordinated service effort, Spanish Club, California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and Planeteers Club are sponsoring a coat drive for the Poverello House.
The groups will collect coats, scarves, blankets, hats and any other warm items. Donations may be submitted to a box in front of the high school office through the end of the semester, Dec. 17.
According to Planeteers Club co-president Ricky Lopez, ’11, campus clubs united for this cause in order to encourage student participation on a wide range.
“We wanted everyone to be involved with this fundraiser, so that’s why we had all three groups be a part of it,” Lopez said. “The more people we have involved, the better.”
In light of the Christmas season, the groups chose to take time for service. Through the coat drive, Lopez hopes to benefit the Poverello House with warmth.
“We hope people will participate so that we can give back to the community and keep others warm,” Lopez said. “It is good to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves.”
The drive is not restricted to members of the sponsoring clubs, however; anyone in or outside of the school can participate, Lopez said.
Planeteers Club adviser Tina Nakashian hopes to see students taking part in the coat drive and informing others about it.
“The fundraiser is a great way to help the less-fortunate this Christmas season,” Nakashian said. “Hopefully students will be able to get involved with the program and spread the word about it. Everyone counts in this sort of thing, because we want as many people as possible to stay warm this season.”
CSF vice president Sydney Carlson, ’11, views the service as an opportunity for the student body to collaborate, as the clubs have, on a beneficial activity.
“The coat drive is an opportunity for the student body to come together for helping those in need,” Carlson said. “Our hope is to provide for people who are incapable of doing it for themselves. All the students are able to give, and even adults can participate.”
