Every year, students enrolled in the Video Productions II class are assigned to make and edit a video that is primarily filmed from close-up camera positions.
In senior Zach Camden’s video, “The Balloon” (embedded below), students are seen playing with a pink balloon in close-up, adding a twist to an otherwise normal school day.
Camden says he used this unconventional, seemingly inconspicuous object in order to be original and show how an object as simple as a balloon can bring joy to people’s day.
Adviser Scott Callisch believes that through this assignment, students learn to become more innovative by telling a story without necessarily including people. The overall challenge of the project is to create an entire video without using the more common camera angles.
Students were encouraged to make their video’s plot as creative as possible, despite the extra planning necessary for an assignment filmed entirely in close-up.
