After a full day at Disneyland Resort, adviser Greg Stobbe and 13 representatives of The Feather staff attended the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association Spring National High School Journalism Convention for lectures and classes, April 15.
Kickstarting the day with a continental breakfast, the staff members departed from the DoubleTree Guest Suites for the Anaheim Marriott. After checking in at the convention, editors and writers received packets replete with lecture schedules and agendas.
While many departed for the classes of their choosing, Stobbe and Editor-in-Chief Austin Ward, ’11, had the opportunity to lead a session entitled “Success with a Small Staff.” Their presentation touched on topics ranging from the importance of communication and equal responsibilities to tips on how to encourage staff members.
After a day surrounded by fellow journalists and speakers, the group returned to Downtown Disney District for some last-minute shopping. However, to the surprise of the eight newer members, Ward announced the details of a competition in which they could exercise the tips and tricks they had learned at the convention.
These eight members — students who had not previously attended a JEA/NSPA convention — were divided into groups of two and were given the task of “finding a story” within the walls of Downtown Disney. Once these teams had interviewed their subjects, The Feather staffers returned to their hotel in anticipation of a hearty and relaxing dinner.
Dressed to impress, the group headed to the dimly lit and elegant McCormick and Schmick’s Grille for a dinner that lasted nearly two hours, concluding the day’s activities.
The slideshow below contains 46 photos documenting the group’s third day of the Anaheim trip. Check back the next day for a report and a slideshow on the group’s continued experience at the convention.

Five Guys was definitely a great option to have; their burgers are insanely delicious!
