With losses mounting, the campus baseball team yearns for the simple success of a win.
After a slew of defeats, the team has finally broken the barrier with their first win. Coach Jon Hall and his players now are focused on closing out the season on a positive note.
?The team?s demeanor and inexperience have defined the losing season,? Hall said. ?I just do my best to provide game-like situations to grow from.?
Even though their overall record remains 3-15, signs of improvement are already evident. Beginning the season with overwhelming losses, the team has greatly improved and lightened losses to single digits.
Senior leader Carson Belmont tries to remain optimistic and finish the season on a high note.
?The best thing we can do now is practice hard and play our best,? Belmont said. ?Even though it?s not a great season, there are still some aspects of it we can enjoy.?
The tenacity of team members is evident in their daily two to three hour practices.
?It?s friendships and the love of the game that keep me coming back,? Belmont said. ?It doesn?t feel good to lose, but it doesn?t matter to me because I made a commitment. It?s the little things like casual talk and eating sunflower seeds with friends that make it fun.?
The team?s first win came at Mendota on Apr. 5. With a 17-5 winning score, the team realized that victory was a possibility.
?I was surprised at the Mendota win,? Belmont said. ?After losing so many times, we finally won with a blow-out victory. It showed us that we had talent and could utilize it.?
The Eagle?s let their bats do the talking at Mendota, with several players racking up hits and RBI?s. The pitching game also came together to give the Eagles the game.
The team carried the momentum over into their 11-6 win over Firebaugh on April 12.
?The Firebaugh game was the same thing,? Belmont said. ?We took what we practiced and worked together as a team to win.?
The Eagles current record is 3-15 overall. They next play Tranquility at home on April 22.
