TRANQUILLITY OUSTS EAGLES, 42-19–Oct. 7
With a two-game winning streak under the Eagles’ belts, they faced off against the Tranquillity Tigers, Oct. 7. FC struggled to maintain possession of the ball throughout the enirety of the game though as Tranquillity prevailed to win, 42-19.
Tranquillity set the pace early in the game as they recovered the ball on their own kickoff to set them up in scoring position and scored within a few plays, 7-0. However, the Eagles answered back by marching down the field under the running of Austin Rurik, ’12, who then scored the touchdown and end the quarter down by seven, 14-7.
Despite keeping the game within reach, FC kept turning the ball over with four interceptions by senior Tyler Krigbaum, who threw for 11-29-121 which led to several scoring opportunities for the Tigers.
Junior McKay Mohun, had six solo tackles at corner, says that almost each play they made numerous small mistakes which led to the Tigers having an edge during the game.
“We were doing pretty good when the game started, but as it went on we just kept making small mistakes,” Mohun said. “Not really huge things overall, but we just needed to stay on top of them more.”
FC caught Tranquillity off guard at the beginning of the second half as Rurik ran in for another TD and then Trevor York, ’12, intercepted a ball and ran it in, 27-19. Once again the Eagles turned the ball over though and failed to stop them on defense as the Tigers tallied up another 15 points to win the game, 42-19.
“As a team we lost, that’s it; we could’ve beat them, but we gave up 25 points on offense,” head coach Dan Stockton said. “So if you take that 25 away, we’d be up, but we didn’t do it. We gave them free rides by our offense and so when our defense is on the ground all the time it just creates a problem.”
This next Friday is homecoming and the Eagles will host the Riverdale Cowboys, who are also 2-3. York says that the most important characteristic they must have to win is playing smart.
“On Friday there’s a lot on the line with homecoming, everyone’s watching and everyone wants a win; there’s added pressure to it,” York said. “Our team has to play hard obviously, but it’s more than that. It’s playing smart, it’s seeing things and acting with intelligence, not just hitting hard all the time. Even though you need to do that, it takes intelligence for the game and keep our intensity and attitude up throughout the game.”
The Eagles will next host Riverdale for homecoming, Oct. 14.
