REDCATS DEFEAT EAGLES IN FIRST LEAGUE GAME, 4-0–Jan. 10
To start off the season, FC journeyed to Fowler hoping to beat the Redcats for the second time, but failed to pull out a win, Jan 10. Fowler won, 4-0, to open FC’s West Sequoia League season.
Taking the field a bit distracted, the Eagles were able to focus and hold off the Redcat offense the majority of the first half. However, Fowler lobbed the ball over the defensive line resulting in a break-a-way and the first point of the match.
After half-time, the FC starting players looked weary, causing coach Tony Martinez to sub most of the team. The defense struggled to shut down Fowler’s forwards, allowing another break-a-way and two more wide open shots in quick succession.
Feeling defeated, the Eagles finished out the game unable to score a goal. Defender Katie King, ’14, attributes the loss to the lack of mental preparation before the match.
“I think that we should have been more focused and encouraged people more,” King said.” I feel like they were a team that we could have beat, it was just that our heads weren’t in the game.”
Team captain Maddie Yee, ’13, noticed FC’s dwindling enthusiasm as the game progressed, but believes the setback will not hinder the rest of the season.
“I thought the team played hard in the beginning of the game, but after Fowler scored we got a little discouraged,” Yee said. “During the end of the second half we came back and were more motivated to play. Overall, I think it was a good learning experience, and I’m thankful to be a part of a team that can talk about our weaknesses and move forward toward improvement.”
According to head coach Tony Martinez, reflecting on the loss against the Redcats can supply valuable growth opportunities for the Eagles.
“Well I think it was a learning experience for us,” Martinez said. “We learned that we can’t underestimate our opponent. We need to be ready to play every time we step on the field. The girls realized this after this game.”
The Eagles will next travel to Parlier, Jan. 13. at 5:30 pm.
