For one night each year, film and television enthusiasts can see Tina Fey, George Clooney and Emma Stone on all in one place: The Golden Globe Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA) sorted through quality film and television for the 69th Golden Globe Awards, broadcast live by NBC, Jan. 15.
As always, the two categories of Best Picture were the most coveted awards. These went to The Descendants for drama and The Artist for comedy or musical. Drama’s leading lady for Best Actress was Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), and comedy or musical’s was Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn). Opposite them, George Clooney (The Descendants) took home drama’s Best Actor award, and Jean Dujardin (The Artist) received the award for comedy or musical. On the other side of the camera, Best Director went to Martin Scorsese (Hugo).
On the small screen, Homeland was announced as drama’s Best Television Series, and Modern Family won Best Television Series — Comedy Or Musical. The actors who grace these shows were also rewarded: Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) and Laura Dern (Enlightened) took home Best Actor and Best Actress in the Comedy Or Musical category; Kelsey Grammer (Boss) and Claire Danes (Homeland) grabbed the top awards for Drama.
For Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television, Downton Abbey received the HPFA’s favor. Kate Winslet (Mildred Pierce) received Best Actress under this category, and Idris Elba (Luther) won Best Actor.
Attention was turned to Morgan Freeman, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Presented by Sidney Poitier and Dame Helen Mirren, this honor was presented to Freeman for his contributions to film, having made over 50. In Poitier’s words to Freeman, “You become the character; the character becomes you.”
Before the honors and awards, each star made an appearance on the red carpet. While each one received deafening cheers, interviewers and fashion critics raved the most over Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie and Rooney Mara for their stunning and unique styles. Common trends were blush tones and high necklines.
Once inside, the celebrities were treated to a show of even more celebrities. As host, Ricky Gervais was invited back after creating a fuss with his controversially provocative performance last year. This time around, his speeches and jokes were toned down, but did not fail to poke fun at NBC, HPFA, divorced couples and anyone else in the line of fire.
The next notable evening in Hollywood is the Screen Actors Guild Awards live on TNT, Jan. 29. This ceremony will honor achievements in 2011 film. For a full list of 2012 Golden Globe nominations and winners, visit the HPFA website.
