EAGLES USE OVERTIME, BEAT PARLIER, 2-1– Jan. 13
Venturing to Parlier High School for their second league game, FC played with vigor and energy, ultimately outscoring their opponent in OT, 2-1, Jan. 13.
During their warm-up, the Eagles seemed focused and ready to play. Within two minutes of kick-off Maddie Yee, ’13, found the back of the net, perfectly set up by her teammates.
However, due to a lapse in concentration, Parlier was able to counter shortly thereafter, bringing the score to a tie where it would remain for the rest of the game.
The energy, positive outlooks and coherence of the team was evident as every player fought for the win. FC kept the ball on the opposing half for most of the match, but their inability to score forced the game into two ten-minute halves of overtime.
The Eagles could not come up with a goal but a handball in the box gave FC a scoring chance. Freshman Mackenzie Devereaux took the penalty kick and finished the shot, scoring the winning point of the match.
“I was really nervous because coach looked at me and said, ‘Can you make it?’ and I told him I could and he asked me again,” Devereaux said. “I thought it was going to go over but it went in! I think that we did an amazing job; the whole team. We worked super hard and didn’t give up.”
Comparing the Eagles performance to previous game against Fowler, forward Brooke Stobbe, ’12, recognizes the dramatic change in attitude amongst teammates.
“I think the difference from one game to the next is all about the practices in-between,” Stobbe said. “There was a lot of energy and effort on Wednesday and Thursday, and that energy carried onto Parlier’s field on Friday. Instead of just wanting to win, we set our minds on it, and executed a game with purpose and determination.”
The Eagles will next play Riverdale high school at home, Jan. 18. For more information, read the Girls’ soccer sport shorts: Garces Holiday Soccer Festival or Perez utilizes tenacity, encouragement to guide team.
