FC SECURES 2-0 WIN AGAINST TIGERS, MOVE TO PLAYOFFS–Feb. 8
FC entered the match against Tranquillity with expectations of a win, and pulled through with a 2-0 shut out of Tranquillity, Feb 8.
The Eagles took the field focused on playing their best in order to advance to the playoffs. This mentality aided the team’s cohesiveness and the ball remained on the Tigers side nearly the entire half. All that remained was for FC to finish their chances.
With the incentive of entering playoffs, the Eagles continued to press midway through the first half and a shot from Rhyann Crain, ’15, deflected off a Tiger defender and into the goal. Since the Tigers were not threatening, FC made a change in formation, adding one player to the midfield for an offensive push.
Aiming to advance their lead, the Eagles began the second half with the same enthusiasm as the first. With a multitude of scoring opportunities, FC was expectant of another goal. Eventually Ivette Ibarra, ’15, drove a cross from Maddie Yee, ’13, into the left part of the cage to put the Eagles up by two. While FC had a couple of more chances, they finished the match strong, earning a spot in the WSL playoffs next week.
Crain commended the team for their persistent efforts and felt her contribution to the win gave her confidence.
“As a team we did great I think we played really hard and didn’t give up,” Crain said. “When I got my second goal this season it felt great and I was excited to know I am capable of making a goal.”
Head coach Tony Martinez recognized FC’s desire to beat the Tigers and felt confident his team would come out on top. His expectations were met as the Eagles rose to the occasion and he congratulates the squad for the efforts.
“The team was ready to play,” Martinez said. “They understood what was on the line. They came out fired up, talking, passing and attacking the ball. It was what I had hoped for. The girls did a great job and with this win we are now in the playoffs for the first time in many, many years!”
The Eagles will next play Caruthers at home, Feb 9. As it is the last home game, it is designated as Senior Night. Check back for the dates of the playoff games.
