GOLF 2012
EAGLES PLACE THIRD–March 5
On March 5, the Eagles traveled to Eagle Springs to participate in the annual Ironman Tournament. Despite having a team of 6 players, only 4 were allowed to participate.
Out of a field of 15 teams, the Eagles tied for second and officially placed at third after a scorecard playoff.
Senior Tyler Zaentz enjoyed the style of the tournament, happy to take a break from stroke play and play a more relaxed style of golf.
“It’s always fun to play in tournaments like this because they are a little more laid back and the scramble format takes a lot of the pressure off of our bottom players.” Zaentz said. “This being said, I was pretty impressed with how Christopher Grossman and Colby Lee maintained their composure throughout the tournament. I thought that shooting a 64 was a pretty realistic goal but Jeff Roseth and I played lights out and received help at key points from Chris and Colby. A tie for second is pretty good for us considering this was a pretty competitive field. Overall I’m pretty happy with the team’s performance and I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season has to offer.”
Coach Jeff Hopper came away from the tournament pleased with the performance of the team and thankful for the learning experience the freshmen endured.
“This was a day when we could ride our experienced players in Jeff and Tyler and add some pivotal help from Christopher and Colby to post a very nice scramble score of 60, with twelve birdies and six pars.” Said Hopper. “Only Bullard, one of the strongest D1 teams, shot a score lower than ours, and we beat several of our rivals, including CVC, Yosemite and Kerman.”
As is customary in most golf tournaments, a single hole was pre-determined to be a closest-to-the-pin challenge, with the player who hits the ball nearest the hole winning a small prize. Fresno Christian’s own Tyler Zaentz won this contest, hitting the ball 1’9″ away from the hole on the 130-yard second hole.
“I was pretty excited to get closest to the pin. Zaentz said. “I hit it in there pretty tight and actually thought it had a chance of going in.”
The Eagles will next play against Reedley, March 8 at Sunnyside Country Club.
