EAGLES COME OUT SHORT AGAINST CARUTHERS–March 22
After coming off of a 5-4 victory over Firebaugh, the Eagles hoped for a repeat performance against the Caruthers Blue Raiders, March 27. The matches went back and forth the entire day as both teams seemed pretty even. The Blue Raiders eventually pulled through and outplayed the Eagles in doubles to garner a 5-4 win over FC.
For freshman Andrew Hindes, Varsity tennis is a whole new world compared to playing in junior high. He says he was a little nervous going into the season.
“It’s pretty intimidating playing on Varsity because I have just played one year of junior high tennis,” Hindes said. “I can’t slack off and take it easy; I need to just keep on working hard.”
While he may have been intimidated at first, Hindes played with aggressive tenacity. He ended up winning his third doubles match along with partner Jonathan Passmore. Hindes shares his thoughts on their 8-5 comeback victory.
“They were always ahead but towards the middle we got on a winning streak,” Hindes said. “We won three games in a row and pulled ahead. Since we won, now I know I can win on Varsity.”
Although it was tough to lose, coach Rob Foshee is glad his team continued to fight. He hopes his players will improve their game during practice.
“I think we kept fighting to the very end as far as matches go,” I think we’re still building; this is only our second match. The problem is we need to build and try not to lose because we are in league.”
Due to an ankle injury, junior Brandon Porter sat out during doubles play. Four year Varsity player Brady Lee, ’12, played first doubles with sophomore Adam Loughney. After a back and forth match, the doubles partners ended up winning in a tie-breaker, 7-7 (7-2). Foshee comments on Lee’s leadership.
“Brady did a good job in doubles playing with a new partner,” Foshee said. “He helped carry that team by being a good leader.”
The Eagles will next travel to face the Fowler Redcats, March 29. Their next home games are against Riverdale, April 10, and Firebaugh, April 12.
