Fowler Easter Classic Tournament
FC TIES WASHINGTON UNION, DEFEATS COALINGA–March 31
After coming off of a 4-1 win over Firebaugh, March 27, the Eagles traveled to Fowler to compete in the West Coast Growers Fowler Easter Classic, March 31. FC had double header against the Division III Washington Union Panthers and the D-IV Coalinga Horned Toads.
In the first game, Washington Union surged ahead, taking a 7-0 lead by the second inning. However, FC was not finished. They scored two in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth while Washington Union only put up one more run, 9-8.
FC was led under the hitting of seniors Austin Rurik, 2-3, Ryan Neufeld, 1-5, and Tyler Krigbaum, 1-4.
“If I’m being completely honest I didn’t expect anything but to compete, I forgot they were a D-III team so that thought never affected my mindset,” Krigbaum said. “Coming back from being down that many runs was a mental battle just as much as physical, but we are a talented and extremely hard working team. We never gave up.”
The Panthers still had the drive to win left in them as they scored one more run in the last inning, tying the game 9-9. Since it is a tournament, tie games are allowed.
Right after, the Eagles took on Coalinga. FC scored one run in the first and kept their lead throughout the rest of the game, to take the win 7-4.
Seniors Trevor York and Adam Wood headed up FC’s offense. York hit 3-3, with two RBI’s and Wood 1-3, with his first homerun of the season. He says it was an “unreal” feeling.
“As soon as I hit it, it felt like I got all of the ball and when I looked up I just saw how high it was,” Wood said. “As I was running around the bases I was really supprised that I hit it and it just felt unreal. I think it has got to be one of the best feelings you could have.”
Next up is Fowler, who they will play Monday, April 2, and Wood says he completely ancticipates a win.
“I think that it should be a close game and I expect us to win,” Wood said. “I also think that because it is the first meeting between us and since it is so early in the season that it will be hard to tell who the better team really is.”
The Eagles will next continue on in the Fowler Easter Classic against Fowler, April 2, at 11:30 a.m. on the Varsity Field.
