GIRLS’ SOFTBALL, 2011-12
The Eagles played against the Riverdale Cowgirls for the second time in the WSL league, April 26. Due to a recent recovery of junior Taylor Neufield, FC had an additional player on the field thus allowing an extra rotation in the line-up.
The Cowgirls came out strong, scoring 14 runs by the end of fourth inning. Contrary to Riverdale’s success at the plate, FC was unable to score any runs, resulting in an Eagle defeat, 15-0.
According to Neufield, it is important to focus on basic fundamentals of softball such as speed and to get on base.
“We just need gotta focus on making runs as well as fundamentals.” Neufield said. “I feel that we have the ability to hit balls, it is just that we need to be quicker on our feet.”
Neufield says that throwing long distance is one of the areas that she needs to work on. According to Neufield the team can defeat other teams, but it is necessary for them to have fun on the field at the same time.
“I feel that I can improve on my long distant throws,” Neufield said. “I know that our team can win anytime it is just that we need to work together at all times and just relax and have fun.”
According to freshman Gaby Siqueiros, Riverdale is a more advanced team with more experience, but despite losing, she is proud of her teammates for trying their best until the end.
“Riverdale was a hard team,” Siqueiros said. “They had more people and they were definitely more experienced compared to us. But I think we responded pretty well and we did not give up until the end. So I am glad that we got to play such an advanced team. We can definitely learn from this experience.”
Siqueiros says that it is important for the team to stay calm even when they are losing and stick to the plays the coaching staff advise them to.
“We need to stick to basic plays,” Siqueiros said. “Sometimes when we are losing, we try to do different things instead of the plays that the coaches told us. But we need to trust our coaches and listen to them whether we are winning or losing.”
The Eagles will next host Tranquillity Tigers on April 30.
